Changing a wheel stud?

I was reading about changing one because I didn't think I could do it without removing the hub.

Seems like several people were saying the front wheel studs can be removed easily, but after close inspection, it sure doesn't look possible.

So is it without removing the hub?

I might need a picture to show me where to knock it out. I suppose looking at the wheel, from about 30-90 degrees there is some room, but surely not enough to get a stud out, it looks too long to do that.

BillBoost37 told me this: cut it down, then pound the half that's left out. Typically if you grind one side of the hat on the new one, you can slide it in then pull it into the hub with a spare lug nut.

I took my wheel off to find a stripped/cross threaded stud and couldn't get it out. Haven't tried this yet but sounds like it'll work.

Or..you could loosen the hub bolts w/o taking them off and try to pull it forward. You don't need much room.. 1/4" would probably do it.

If you cut down the broken one and pound it back, it'll pop right out. Then getting your new one in is all you have to worry about. Grind part of the edge off one side of the hat, turn the hub to find the best entry position and once you get it slid in..then it's pulling it home the rest of the way with a lug nut that's expendable. (I always pick up a few spares at the JY)

what size is that nut you gotta take off to get to hub? I just remember it was pretty freaking big and Its like the one size in the world I didnt have at home

You don't. It's the axle nut 36mm stock size, 34mm if it's been replaced.

The axle will give you the 1/4" wiggle room w/o taking the nut off. Why remove/loosen anything you don't have to? The three bolts I'm talking about are 1/2" technically or a loose 13mm and they hold the hub to the knuckle.
