Going to change the exhaust gasket on my gt tomorrow, its the one at the front of the cat. Has anyone ever done this? Tips? Thanks
 


Right at the front of the cat. My buddy told me about the bolts, I bought new ones already to switch them out.
 
Front being where?

The front of the cat is welded on the pipe and has no gasket near it untill the flange where it bolts to the manifold.

The rear of the cat is very close to the rear catback flange where they is a gasket.

the gasket thats ahead of the cat, closest to it. My buddy is a state cert mechanic and looked at it and showed me what to buy. Id take a pic but its too dark out
 


You guys..

I don't soak these bolts, don't heat them up (they are in exhaust anyhow) and never have much trouble. Maybe it's the angle etc you are going at them ?
 
I'm on the ground. Once had one on Bonne that didn't want to play nice. Bought 6 point box wrenches and used part of my jack handle as a rod then beat the piss out of it with the bigger hammer. Finally got it.
 


I replaced my cat, from below, and was STUNNED when the 15 year old bolts spun right off with a 3/8" extension and 6 point socket. I was expecting to be down there with a grinder or torch - they came right off for me - no cheater bar or hammers etc.

Granted, I live in Denver which is very dry and does not use salt on the roads during the winter.
 
I didnt feel like battling the bolts because im selling after winter, so I just smeared red RTV around it, will avoid me getting fix it tickets.
 
i cant stop thinking hes talking about the cat to res gasket, not the dp to manifold. that would be closest to the cat.

and if thats the case, just buy 2 new nuts and bolts, try to unbolt them if they break who cares or if they strip the heads off cut the old ones off, the gasket costs 8 bucks and your done. bolts and nuts $1 at the hardware store. could be a $10 fix.....
