• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

car wont start

your talking about the exhaust manifolds? if its just smoking... i guess let it burn off, scrape what ever you can off. it wont burn for to long, thats for sure lol, them pipes get HOT.

LET IT IDLE AND WATCH IT LIKE A HAWK.

and its best to change struts in pairs.

thanks, after the ether incident, i always have a fire extinguisher by my side when doing anything like this. and the p.o. was replacing them one by one, and right after he replaced the front passenger strut, the car died, so he gave up. so the other 3 are brand new.

hes not to good with cars tho, just knows the basics. but yea, the car was sentenced to the scrap yard, and i took it off his hands for scrap price, 350$ ;)

your doing better than i did, i got mine for 800 and tossed a easy 2000 at it in the last 2 years. but i knew it needed work, so it was all planned to get done. the trans was a surprise tho. lol

So let's get this clear for everyone.
You changed the CPS? Do you mean Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) or Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP)?

The Camshaft Position sensor was bad, telling the ecm to fire the plugs, and pulse the injectors at the wrong times. so even though i was getting spark, fuel, and good compression, it was just at the wrong times. just thought id explain that for future reference incase any1 else ever has a similar problem. and scotty, i actually planned on pulling a low mileage tranny from the junkyard just to have a spare lying around cause i know they r known weaknesses, especially at 217k lol

Technically guys.. Crank Position Sensor is referred to as the CKPS to keep it from ever being confused with the Camshaft Postion Sensor aka CPS.

Free stuff on internet...but I have seen these designated as such on ALLDATA.
This schematic is from '97. They may have, actually pretty sure acronyms have changed slightly from model to model due to new sensors and confused people.

Yeah, likely. I use GM ESI and they have always seemed to keep up with CKPS. It's all the same in the end as long as you get the right part, right? :th_thumb-up:

Important thing is there won't be any confusion for future readers of this thread.
Every once in a while a thread has a useful future...this being one of them. :th_thumbsup-wink:

Great news. Congrats on getting the car up and running. This thread was turning into quite the saga. I know that probably more than one of us were thinking it would have been great if you lived closer so they could come over and help you out.
