Car wont start need help erratic rpm

But if it goes, you will see erratic rpm's and even the engine shutting down and not starting cause the computer doesn't know the actual rpms of crank and firing position, etc...

it wasnt really overheating just lost enough coolant to cause steam under the hood but was repaired before it ever overheated
 


changing out crank position sensor. its a possibilitiy that one of the razor blades i was using to clean off the gasket from the water pump had fallen behind the crank pulley and i know there is a magnet in there which could have ruined the sensor im gunna have fun getting that crank pulley off
 
changed out crank position sensor the old one was ruined but still not getting any spark...icm? or does the computer need to be relearned for the cps or when the throttle body is taken off does it need reprogram shootin in the dark need some help please
 
Check the wiring harness from crank sensor to ICM. Ensure that you reconnected the sensor.

The TB shouldn't cause a no spark. And if the sensor is hooked up..it shouldn't either.

both the icm and cps have 12.3 volts they are getting power its just not getting relayed to eachother possible short? in wire from the cps to the pcm or the pcm itself. or is it possible the car jumped timing??
 


I went back to reread as I commonly answer too many posts to keep track of everything and found your mention of code P1518. So I looked it up.

"In some cases the pcm can command the engine off." Hmmmmm Take a look through that as it's the FSM info for the code. Maybe it helps with some fo the testing. I saw something about a shorted wire and thought again about you saying dropped razor and destroyed crank sensor. Maybe there was something else that happened when the sensor was destroyed.

possibly ill have to do the steps for the code. also going to recheck the position of the crank shaft sensor its possible that it is not positioned exactly where its supposed to be as a hair off can cause no spark. really need to get this thing going

did you ever consider my solution, couldnt hurt to try looking behind the passenger side headlight and change the Fuel Resistor, this is all part of your fuel system. this solution you will never find in any mechanics manual, but is effective... trust your instincts on this one before you go over budget and the problem turns out to be simple..

i just dont think thats it im getting fuel im just not getting spark. going to check the postiion of the crank sensor make sure the mounting brackets werent bent

yes i can smell the fuel and see it on the plugs when i hold plug wire up to the coil pack there is no spark nothing at all the icm is good. i swapped it with another 3800 car and it worked fine in the other car. pulled off coil packs to see if by chance all three had gone bad but there still good. im not getting spark

considering this is the only topic you have ever posted about i am somewhat skeptical of your suggestion although i do appreciate you offering a lending hand i do not see how a faulty fuel resistor could cause no spark through the icm to the coil packs. how a faulty fuel resitor could cause an interference between the pcm to the icm. and with a faulty fuel resistor im still getting proper fuel pressure and FUEL. excuse me if i sound rude i just dont appreciate it when people say im wasting my time and how they can gurantee a sure fix especially if theyve never touched my car when it comes to anything there are no guarantees first things first im rechecking my cps then maybe ill get around to checking the horseshoe shaped fuel resistor
 
When the car first acted up, on your way to work, did "reduced power" display on the info center?

Another thought... c heck the ICM ground. I think it would be at a stud/bolt on the front of the engine, right under the the mount that the ICM is attached to.

nothing displayed on the dic the car just kinda surged after pulling away from a stoplight and died it started right back up and basically ran like **** all the way for about a quarter mile and died a couple more times when i was slowly pulling into the lot. i could keep it running if i gave it gas but only above 3k rpms let it sit in the parking space till i got off and would only turn over. got it started with the help of the gas pedal and drove it not even a block till it died for good in the middle of the road and had to push it to a parking space till it got towed. do u have a picture of the ground for the icm its a possibility.

Well in that case maybe you really shouldnt own a pontiac, a have been reading everysingle post from you to others and still nothing. i have always found something with a man that acnt fix his own cars, let alone have to much pride.. sounds like you have money to burn, hey i guess some people like to learn the hard way, you can thank me when you finally get past all the Bulls**t and realize i was only trying to help...
