Car wont shut off!

Well i let my friend borrow my 97 gtp and he left the key on and drained the battery. he tells me he jumped the car with the positive on the lug on the fuse box and the negative 0n a strut mount bolt. now the car wont shut off. if you take out the key the car stays running and functions normally (except the steering wheel lock when key is out).\
im hoping this isnt a fried ecm. :th_sick1: any help on this would be greatly appreciated. (hoping its just a stuck relay)

thanks in advance

Well I feel confident, to some degree in saying that if it were a fried PCM, that the car would not be running. Now, for the rest of it, I aint going to be much help, Im not sure what would cause that.

On my '89 GP that I had, I could pull the key out of the ignition and it would keep running. But I could also still turn the engine off. I never saw it as a problem, more of a convenience in the winter time 'cause I could go out, start the car up in winter time, take the key with me and lock the doors and go back inside.

The question here would be whether or not you can turn the key cylinder at all. If you can turn the key to the off position and pull the key out and the engine still runs, then how are you shutting it off?

If you can shut it off at all, disconnect the batter and reset the electrical system and reset the PCM and see if that helps any. If not, next stop would be to look at fuses or relays. Quite honestly Id have to sit down and ponder that for a moment to figure out how best to proceed.

i can turn the cylinder all the way to the off position and it stays running normal. i just pulled the ignition relay to shut it down for the mean time. its currently at the trans shop getting the trans built, so i cant really take a look at it now.

Relay. It's one of the ones in the box under the engine compartment. The one you pulled out in the engine compartment to shut it off is the one that is bad or stuck.

Replace it and you should be fine.

It's kind of hard to explain but i have an intercooler and the i/c pump i have wired to this relay.1 wire going to it. That way when ever the ignition is on the pump is on. it's temp. for the moment.

It's kind of wierd because with the wire shoved into one of the sockets for the relay and the relay then inserted in like normal....If i tighten the cover lid on to much for the under hood fuses it will make the car stay running and do the same thing that is happening to you.

So thats why i say it's the relay. Hope that helps in some way

haha yeah no kidding.. should smack him in the head with a pillowcase full of oranges for being stupid. oh well, hopefully a simple relay swap is the fix.

Let us know if it is, its an interesting issue that doesnt come up that often and it would be nice to know where to point people that may see this problem in the future.

Dont let friends borrow your gtp haha

I'd understand, being mad about him killing the bat, but he jumped it correctly, read your owners manual, your never supposed to jump directly at the bat, cause hydrogen gas is released while a bat is charging, and any spark could cause a fire/explosion:th_peaceout:
