Car wont crank over after replacing LIM gasket

Hi Guys,

Bit of a noob to this forum but have used other forums for different cars before.

At the weekend I used a how to video to change out the LIM and UIM gaskets and also the whole UIM was replaced.

On attempting to start up the car again it would not crank over. It just makes one loud clunk and then nothing. At first I thought it was a dead battery as all the dash dimmed while trying to start it but charged it up and still the same and also jumped it from a battery used for racing and still no difference.

I have also taken the starter motor off to check that and that works perfectly fine.

The battery was disconnect for a good 8 hours while I was changing the gaskets so could any of the anti theft stuff need resetting? I also did try to put the transmission into neutral while the battery was disconnected could this cause that kid of stuff cause it to need a reset?

While the UIM was off a lot of coolant did spill out from the area around by the thermostat housing. Is there any way coolant could get into a piston with the LIM still on which then may have caused a piston to hydrolock which is why it won't crank over?

Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance

First, make sure the UIM to throttle body coolant ports aren't leaking.
With a new UIM there shouldn't be any problems with the area around the EGR inlet.

Remove the spark plugs and see if the motor will turn by hand.
If it does then crank engine without plugs to blow the water out.
Reinstall the plugs and start it up.

Yes..Likely you got coolant into a cylinder. Damn Rico beat me to it.. but pull the 6 plugs and try to crank it over. Bet you hear one odd noise and then it flips over w/o issue. Dry the plugs and give it a try.

Rico..

I'm reading, answering, actually working, telling the lost IT guy where the new girl is....

Once in a while.. You are going to get to a thread first. It's ok. Believe me..I'm cool with you doing most of the typing.

One thing these guys forgot to say.. Unplug all of the injectors so they aren't spraying fuel.

Once you are done cranking it and letting it spit out coolant. I myself, cranked each cylinder closed and stuck a blow gun with a hose on the end through the spark plug hole and blew out more, trust me there will still be a good bit that comes out.

Cause it only primes the cylinder once per time that you turn the key to on. After that it doesn't put any fuel in. Therefore ...it's not enough to bother mentioning...

Neener neener neeeeeeeener.

Chuck's gonna back me up too.

Heck.. none of us told him to unhook his ICM, cause he really doesn't need to. Sure there's gonna be a couple sparks jumping around. But it's not enough to warrant it. We technically should tell him to undo the 7mm holding the connector onto the ICM. Then you won't have spark til you reconnect it.

And all that extra fuel coming out of the plug holes will be igniting from the plug wires. I vote he do this in the dark and film it.
It'll look like a formula 1 dragster. LOL

Just kidding!

Reality is..

I personally have pulled plugs and cranked over engines (in Advance Auto's parking lot as well as home) to clear a coolant flood in the cylinders. Sometimes takes drying off the plugs 2-3 times if the cylinders are very full. Once you get it running..keep it running and you'll clear the rest.

kinda like steam cleaning.

most of it will come out from cranking it over 3-5 times.

easiest to have someone watch to see how much is still coming out so when it gets to just a little mist spraying out, then you should be good to go

Ehhhh I cranked a few times.. dropped plugs is.. no start. Take out..dry..crank more. 3 cylinders fired up. I kept it running until the 4th caught..after that a little work and got the rpm up. That cleared it right out. Tada.. magic.

Just to finish this thread up, after wrestling with 140k old spark plug wire and boots (this isn't my car I was working on as I would never let mine go that far without a change!) piston 6 was full to the top with coolant. Cleared it out and it started first time so thanks for the help guys
