Car sounds like it wants to turn over but cant. Checked everything and found the reason is no spark. Replaced the pcm still no spark. tried a stock coil pack, still no spark were can i look next to find out why i am not getting spark?

Wait. Does the car turn over or not? Most of the times, you check spark by turning the car over.

Or does the car turn over, but it just doesn't start. And you don't have any spark?

Re: car will not turn over

car does turn over but will not start i check plugs 1 3 5 and neither one will give me a spark when testing it

Re: car will not turn over

Probably your Crankshaft Position Sensor as it will cause that condition. However it tends to be an intermittent issue first. Car will die suddenly then start back up or start back up in a few minutes or it will spit and spudder, tach will go to zero when driving, TCS will turn off, that sorta thing.

Since the CPS would involve a little bit of work to replace, check simple things first. Check your fuses, particularly any that are connected to the ignition. If you ruled out the coil packs then the next easiest thing to check would be the ICM or ignition control module. That is the device the Coil packs sit on and connect directly to.

If you checked three spark plugs and had no spark at any of them then I cant imagine you'd have three bad plug wires or three bad plugs all of a sudden.

So my suspicion would lie with the ICM (though its been known to fail its not terribly common) or the CPS (which is a much more common failure).

Re: car will not turn over

I dont know of any down and dirty ways to test the ICM. Best hope there is to take it off and take it into someplace like Autozone and see if they can test it. The only way I know that you could effectively test the ICM is to check for the input pulses and to do that you would need an o-scope to do that.

Re: car will not turn over

Im not sure. If they have automotive diagnostic tools, I would think so, but I cant say for sure. Ive never seen Advance Auto advertise they do any diagnostic testing, but I have seen Autozone do so I just dont know if it includes components like the ICM.

Re: car will not turn over

Also, inspect the wiring harness that runs from the crank sensor/cam sensor up to the ICM. It's a small harness that runs right up against the block, behind the coil bracket and plugs into another harness by the fuel pressure regulator. Sometimes the harness rubs against the pulleys and can short out. Check all connectors for any signs of corrosion or damage as well.

Re: car will not turn over

ill check the harness tonight but i just did a top swap just recently i didnt notice anything wrong with the harness

Re: car will not turn over

Then maybe you forgot to plug something in? It happens.
When you checked the plugs....did they have any gasoline on them? If they did, then it's definately a spark problem of some sort...but if they didn't have gasoline on them it could most definately be the harness. The Injectors are triggered by the crank and cam sensors. If they aren't getting the signal, then no fuel and no spark.

Re: car will not turn over

the top swap was done on the 10th and had been running fine until last thursday, i didnt check the plugs, thought that if i disconnect the plug wire and put a screw in it and aim for the block it should spark. i will check the plugs tonight for gas on them

Re: car will not turn over

That's one way of testing, and another is to put the plug in the boot, just hold the boot with a pair of insulated pliers, because it sure as hell don't feel good when it bites you!

Re: car will not turn over

well ill double check the spark tonight if not then i will inspect the harness and if that looks fine ill get a used icm

found out my icm harness was disconnected, reconnected it and it started right up! finished switching the coil packs, pcm, and air intake try and start it again nothing, i knew i was getting spark so i checked the fuel nothing. The pump is not priming, i checked the fuse and it was fine cant tell about the relay im just going to replace that tonight... what else can i check for the pump besides it being dead? i also ordered a prj pump harness thinking that may fix it
