• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

car will crank but wont start

So i checked fuel and spark and all checked out. followed a lot of advice in the links above too.
Think I have it narrowed down to the VATS.
I can follow the instructions for "Turn the key to On for ten minutes 3x" fix, and the car will start right up multiple times. When I come out in the morning, same symptoms, no start. obviously dont have an extra 30 minutes in the mornings to spend re-doing the process only to have it leave me stranded away from home.
Is there more to the VATS fix that im missing?? Again, I have an '04 so I assume I cant use the 'resistor fix' bc I cant Ohm out the key chip. right?

Your posts are confusing. Does the engine turn over but not start? Or does the engine not turn over at all?

You mention it not turning over unless you jump the starter. But you also mention the starter solenoid (small wire) is getting power while key is in start position. But your title states car is cranking. Can you clarify are you troubleshooting a no start condition or engine won't run condition.

Your car doesn't have VATS, but your issue does have to do with security.

The way your starting system works, they key turning to on makes a request for the PCM to give power to the starter soleniod. The fact that you can do a key relearn and it fires up tells me it's not the transmission gear indicator. I would check the connections at the pcm by removing each and reconnecting them five times.

For your 04 you have Passkey 3. Your key has an RFID which is excited and read by the antitheft module at the ignition. The module sends the data to the BCM and then communicates over the CAN BUS (along with the radio, ECM, DIC, etc). Once photobucket is back up I can show you the wiring diagram. Are you getting messages such as "Service Theft System", "Theft System Not Programmed", "Starting Disabled Due to Theft", etc?

Sorry for the confusion with my verbiage. The car will not turn over at all unless the key relearn is preformed Then it turns over AND starts for that moment for a few starts. The next morning she wont turn over again...just dash lights.
Im convinced now that its security related and will investigate more on what you've already provided me here.

Thanks so much for this education. Im completely ignorant when it comes to the security side of things. I'll review the diagrams and see what I can find.
Im not getting and security messages on the DIC. Just ABS stuff which has been going on for quite some time...just a broken wire I believe.

I will absolutely check these connections but c'mon....5 times??!! I'll admit to my ignorance but are you yanking my chain here?!

So I finally got around to checking the pcm connections and physical wire condition. It all appeared ok and I tried the 5+ times removal of the connectors.
Before I did this the battery was dead from sitting so long. After a quick jump charge from another vehicle, it tried to start twice then on the third try it started. I took it around the block a few times to blow some carbon and slosh the fuel. Got home and turned it on/off 3 times after removing the key each attempt. Two hours later all I get now shows in this video. http://

Low battery voltage. Trickle charge your battery back to full then test. (Or drop off battery at Autozone to have charged and tested.)
