Car hard to start sometimes.

Hi

I have a 2002 grand prix gt n/a. Sometime when I go to start the car it takes a few turn overs to get going. Occasionally wont start the first time. Sometimes it seems like it has a slight missfire as well. I have installed new plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter is good. Checked the ohms on the coil packs as well. I have to check the ohm on the injectors still. Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

Have you been able to check the fuel pressure, just in case? It could be a few other things but that would be a good starting point and if that is good we can offer up a few other suggestions.

Ok thanks, I will put the gauges on sometime this week and get back with the readings.

You mean it cranks for a little while longer than usual before it catches? Usually it's the fuel pressure regulator (FPR).

If thats the case just pick up the improved Borg-Sorenson FPR and be done with it. Pull the vacuum line off to the FPR and see if you get fuel coming out. If so its probably bad, but it still could be on the verge even if there is no fuel that comes out.

Take the vacuum line off the FPR and smell the hole in the FPR. If you smell gas, it's leaking.

FWIW, mine is leaking and has been for over a year. The only side effect is the few extra turns occasionally on a hot start. Not worth it to replace it yet.

So this wouldn't cause any other issues such as feeling like a slight missfire on the highway or an occasionally slight stuttery idle upon start up?

If it's bad enough, it's possible. I haven't seen it personally.

Thanks I will look into it any idea what a new regulator costs? Is it much work to change? I will have to ask at my old job when I get in there this week. I am more familliar with working on the old 3.1L. The 3.8 is new to me, haha.

Any ideas on what would cause a slight missfire under load? this is also a problem I am having. it's really only noticible on the highway.

Um... I had a Camaro that had this problem. Took a few turns to start.

Replaced the started and was good as gold. Started first try like a champ!

Thanks for the input, but sometimes it will start and die right away so I am pretty sure the stater is good. There is no cranking problems at all.

Definitley not a starter problem.

Sounds like a fuel problem to me for the most part. I'd suggest checking that route out first.

I checked the ohm reading on the injectors yesterday, they were all good. I get a different ohm reading on the 3 coilpacks but all are fairly close, so I think they are ok. I also took the egr off and cleaned it out, but it was not too bad so I doubt that helped anything. I should stop by my old job and put the gauges on the fuel system and see how that is. I will try to do that today.

Today I checked the fuel pressure, was almost 50 psi so that is good. I also scanned the car and nothing came up bad, so I have no idea what is going on.
