The engine will shut off but some type of interlock is keeping it form going all the way to where the key will come out. The orange shifter indicator light in dash is still on and the battery drains so I cant leave the key in and just use the remote to lock it, etc. And ideas what to check?

i have the same problem...under ur steering wheel collum there should be a little circular thing you can pop out with a screw driver.. take a pen or screwdriver and stick it up there then turn ur key back at the same time..this works for me! its a pain in the ass having to do it all the time but i dont feel like spending the money to get it fixed.

The mod from over yonder
Just rip the park lock solenoid out. (the little thing you have to push) There is like two little torx screws the hold it in. You do not need to put a new one in as long as you are not stupid and wont try to take out your key going down the highway. With the solenoid out you can take your key out in any gear.
