Camming this summer...gotta question...

So Im going to cam my topswapped and Stage 2 intercooled GT this summer. I am still going tobuse the car as a mild DD, so I was considering the VS cam...but some said they still drve the XP cam daily with no problems. Give me some pros and cons of the two cams. And if i go with the VS cam, are there any mods to make up for the top end power that people said the VS lacks and vice versa for the XP cam.

Thanks for reading guys.

Ok...found the page you all were talking about and read it. Still my second question is not answered. Is there any mod to make up for what each cam lacks? So far im slowly considering the VS cam and also plan on going to a GenV blower with a northstar TB.

The lack of power seems to be a matter of opinion I haven't come across dyno sheets with everything being the same aside from the cams so that's would be up to u.

You would probably wont outflow your current TB so why a N*?

There's a few threads about both you just gotta read..read..read and figure out which cam is better for YOU! Not what others think is better. Both make power in different rpms. If you doing more city driving for example...vs. if your doing more highway then XP has a good upper rpm range.

Well thats my delimma i guess...i do a fair amount of play on the street as well as the highway. Thats why im torn between the two. I would probably sway toward the VS because I think I play alittle more on the street. But its still hard to ignore the top end gains from the XP. And I s

And I see the N* tb was a popular mod and i figured ill only benefit the motor so why not?

I've installed plenty of S1X and XP cams on DD cars. When tuned, they are very streetable. Heck.. I DD'd an S1X with the mods you are planning all winter etc.

My GP is far from being driven daily, but there is more than enough grunt in the bottom RPM range. The VS has a flatter torque curve. I like both cams.

IMO, if you're going Through the effort to cam a car, get one that you'll be satisfied with, and have a good platform for more mods. My NIC cam, I love the duration and overlap. I have less psi at a certain sc pulley size than say xp guys, but I still have about the same power as them. Plus with the tune that I have, highway mileage is still the same as a properly running stock engine. Xp and NIC seem to offer close to the same amount of power, but go about it different ways. VS cams, I see why certain people would want it, but I just don't see the benefit of swapping a cam that only seems to deliver 1.9 rocker gains.

Either cam will make more low-end torque than you can use on street tires.

The only problem with the XP, is you SHOULD use 130# springs and a double roller timing chain - which will cause more noise and vibration.

GTPower, is that something that has come to light recently? ZZP's site says:* Notes:
This cam (and any cam with a lift of over ~.515) requires upgraded valve springs and modified retainers for safe long term operation on stock heads. You can run higher lift than that with stock valvetrain but you're asking for trouble. Down the road you will be using oil as your valve seals become prematurely worn. When using the stock timing chain and dampener, the 105's are recommended over the 90# springs because they will give less wear on the dampener and are a better spring in general.

They have no mention of suggesting 130's and a DR

I had daily driven a S1X cam for nearly 2 years with a half ass tune. I never understood peoples fear of these cams being non street friendly, I never had issues with it, it never acted funny at a light, never noticed any increased roughness, started up every time like a normal car. I plan to cam my new SSEi with the very exact same cam again.

Somewhat recently. I'm not sure where the post is at, where zzp showed decent gains switching from 130# springs to 150# springs on an XPZ cam, due to valve float. The same thing applies to the XP though. LS6's or 105's are not heavy enough to keep the valves under control with the XP's lobe shape. Obviously, the LS6's and 105's work, but you are leaving some power on the table with those springs. I think that info is somewhat old on their page, but I'm guessing that if you email ZZP and ask them what springs to use, they will recommend something like a 130# spring.

My 01 has an XP cam, and I used to run Manley TI retainers with LS6 springs on it. I switched to Steel retainers and 130 comp springs about a year ago - I don't have actual dyno numbers, but the car picked up about 2-3mph in the 1/4, and about 30whp according to my scans.

Yeah, it definitely needs some updating. For starters, a way to keep it from crashing multiple times on black friday.
