cam?

I might put a cam in my car, if i do im gunna do a cam, headers, pcm, and injectors; I want an intercooler but i do not have the money to go that far because if something were to break i would be screwed. But anyways, what is the lowest size pulley i can use with a
-VS cam from zzp
-XP cam from zzp
-S1X intense racing cam

Ask the motor.

We will never know for sure, some could handle a 3.0 with no issue or it might only like a 3.2/3.3/3.4 etc etc.

There is no complete recipe for this. Monitor the motor with a bigger pulley first and go from there.

Never used a cam on a gtp, only the one gtp i had was modded with smaller pulley, never measured but wasn't stock.

All I know is, you got to check the KR, knock retard. No knock is good, the more knock, the worse your engine is getting, and might just actually start knocking.

Do i need to change pushrods whenever i get the XP cam? im keeping stock 1:6.1 rockers, also do i need the timing chain because i just got a new one a couple months ago.

No need to change pushrods with any of your above choices. I would change to a double roller if you're getting an XP cam so to answer that question, yes. Also machined oil pump cover, double roller timing chain (again, people have run a single with the XP, but it's not recommended) and better springs. Like 130# springs. Plus a tune and whatever else you normally need for cam install.

I see you're a fairly new member? A lot of things can go wrong with a cam install so if you're not a pretty competent mechanic, or aren't going to pay someone else to do it, so you might consider steering clear of the Cam.

An intercooler like you mention in the OP isn't a bad idea. If done correctly its easier than a cam and can be very reliable. Sealing it is where people mess up.

Do more research, ask more question here before jumping into something.

And With a Cam, Headers and E85 I could only run a 3.0 pulley with no knock. Off of e85 I can do a 3.25, but still see knock occasionally (pretty rarely, but it pops up now and again).

i'm running an XP with just headers and 105 springs and a 3.2 pulley. About 9.5-10 lbs of boost. Haven't tried the 3.0 yet. No issues (yet).

In my opinion, a cam install is a lot more straight forward than an intercooler install, and if everything is purchased new, the cam will be cheaper then the intercooler

Cam isn't easer than an Intercooler.

Running Intercooler with 1.9 rockers, gen 5 and 2.8 pulley! Overkill tune.

If you're doing the cam with the engine out of the car then maybe. But with it in, and the heads on, changing Springs alone sucks so bad so I can't agree with you here.

Plus with all the gaskets, timing chain, Springs, misc tools, etc my cam install was easy a grand and I did all the work myself. Intercooler is about that or less from zzp.

Why recommend a DR with a xp but not s1x?
Never heard of anyone running a dr with an s1x. But it's recommended by just about everyone for the xp. Good point though cause they're very similar. Maybe someone more familiar with the xp can weigh in with why it's recommended to use the dr with it.

I'm running an XP, on a new oe style timing set, 110 springs, idle bumped up a little to keep the slack out of the chain...less tensioner wear....i saw no need for a double roller.

i'm also full-size intercooled. and tuned.

you are the first person I heard say this. The xp and s1x are basically the same.
S1x
210/221 .321/.329 @1.6 .514/.577
xp
206/216 .320/.317 @1.6 .512/.507

so yea. If the XP "needs" a double roller then the s1x certainly does as well

no need to make someone spend the money on something they don't need

lol "more familiar can chime in" ? what do you think I just did ? ;)

okay...

from your vendor link
"A double roller is a good addition for any cam install. It allows you to eliminate the stock timing chain dampener which wears out around 125k in all 3800's. "

My whole point was to present the op with all the info. It's his choice. I didn't run a dr on my setup because I saw no reason to. If he's considering going with an xp, he should at least know it's recommended by the people who make the cam. I agree if he goes with 105s, and sets his idle somewhere in the 700-800 range a dr is overkill, but I just wanted op to know its something to consider. Many members on this site have run it, many have not with the xp.

It says it specifically is needed for an xp, now we all know zzp is full of sh1t, but, it should be considered.

The whole point was just justifying the xp cam as needing a DR.
you have a s1x. You should already know how stupid close the 2 cams are.

Giving all the info is fine but it just your first post didn't exactly list all the options. It just said xp = DR

i ran the s1x with single chain and 105s
my buddy ran the xp same set up
the dampener looks the same. We screw around with the idle

go to 130s. IS3. Swapped to a DR. And all the work involved to make it fit - I wouldn't put that on anyone just trying to use a vs/s1x/xp
