I just called the shop to see how my cam install is going on and the mechanic says he's pretty much finished, except that he needs to replace the engine mount and the coolant elbows, but he also said that he "decided" to use the stock rocker bolts instead of the ARP ones that came with the kit because hey "seemed" too weak compared to the stock ones....
 


ARP makes rocker bolts? Sure you don't mean the Comp Cams ones? They are fine...granted, the factory rocker bolts are TTY bolts and I don't recommened reusing them.
 
They hold up JUST fine as long as the bolt holes are properly cleaned and use torque them correctly...pretty sure its 25 ft.lbs. too.
 
i never had an issue with reusing the rocker bolts, but if you have replacements might as well use them.
 
Yeah I just hate to waste brand new bolts. at least i'll be testing the new cam by tomorrow around this time.
 


Shouldn't take more than a couple hours TOPS...it takes longer getting crap off and out of the way than anything.
 
Ok I got news, it's almost done, but the coolant elbows are broken. We looked for them at a local autoparts store, but they don't have them. Do you guys know if I can buy these at Autozone or at the GM dealer? I could order them from ZZP, but would take a long time to get here.
 


I know that our Autozones, O-Reilly's, Napa's, Advanced Auto, and all other auto parts stores stock the coolant elbows since it is a very common part to break on these cars. If you go to the help section there should be a dorman box hanging up on display with both coolant elbows in it as a repair kit for the car.
 
well I just went to autozone with the part number, it does show up on their system, but they don't have it available at any store neither can they order it.

I went to the dealership and they sell it for about 23 dollars but it takes at least 3 days to get it shipped here since they don't have it in stock.

I'm going to plan B for now which would be to try to put something similar in there for the time being or try to glue back together the broken piece and put it back until I get the new one.

Have any of you tried to put anything else other than the original elbow in there? Do you know of any other part that may fit there?

I think the mechanic wants to get a copper elbow adapted there, I guess if it fits well, it will be a better solution...

I can't believe the whole cam thing is being held just because this little piece lol....
 
According to my catalog GM# 24503423 is the elbow for your 98 GTP.... List on it is only $12.48 +tax... tho that is in the US but double???

Altho if you have the 99-03 setup you would need 2 elbows... the GM# 24503423 (List 12.48) & the GM# 12565082 (List 3.76)... so it wouldn't require AS MUCH TAX, but still a hefty amount to hit 23 bux
 


I finally picked up the GTP today. It works great with the new cam. The mechanic made a copper elbow:

I'll take it to the track to see how much it improved. I'm hoping somewhere between .5 and 1 second. What do you guys think?
 
The blower whine is very nice... I thought about selling my rockers and camming, but I finally decided I'm going to keep them and just save for a turbo swap :)
