cam choice

I'm new to the forums and would like to introduce myself first. My name is shawn and I own a 2000 gtp and love the car.
I want a nice streetable car that can run mid to high 13's in the quarter is my main goal. I have money to support the build to a point.
Now to the question. On my car I have a plog and 3" downpipe setup because I love the low end torque that these cars have and I want to keep that cuz all my friends are shocked when I take off like a rapped ape. :th_laugh-lol2: But I'm looking into getting a cam for the car.
What do you guys think?

in all honesty, if all you want is high 13's, you could about do it with bolt ons. a 3.4 setup and a really good tune should get you there. cam's will get you closer to 12's. welcome btw

here is the deal, we have talked previously, i will quote it here:

my OPINION: with a powerlog and downpipe (versus headers), you'll retain more low end torque because the motor has the inability to flow as well without headers. the headers will move the powerband up in the rpm range, thus 'losing' low end torque. however, these cars make so much low end that it might not even matter when all is said and done. a cam on a stock motor would help out with being able to run more boost and/or more timing. however, the more flow the better.

however, i did not know your goals yet. if your goals are mid-high 13s then you won't even need a cam. a cam to run those times is just for show considering with a cam you should be able to run low 13s or high 12s with the right tune and driver.

does this make you think differently? for your goal all you need is a little more boost, maybe some rockers, and a good tune.

How would I go about getting those without rockers or anything like that? I do have some mods at the moment.
K&N intake, throttlebody spacer, ported supercharger, plog and 3" downpipe, 3.4 mps, colder plugs and tstat got to get a ported throttlebody

1) ditch the throttle body spacer, youre reducing the coolant flow to your rear head meaning your rear bank is running hot.

2) find someone with a tuner and get a good tune on the car

3) take the car out and figure out how to launch it well. the key here is to squeak the tires, but not blow them off. if you dont squeak the tires you arent launching hard enough.

given that you can drive and your car is tuned well, you can run 13s right now.

I didnt think I would be able to run that without more mods.
Thats prolly why my temp gauge keeps getting hot kinda quick. I plan on blacking the coolant to the supercharger by filling the lim holes and Open up the side port for better flow. I was talking to reptile about tuning the other day cuz he has a tuner. He can do me a good tune for cheap. If I could run 13's now where would adding rockers to the mix put me?

rockers would put you definitely in the 13s with a good cushion.

however, this is all based on you having a good tune and being able to launch the car well.

AND...get stronger springs...for SOME REASON...I bet this car is beat on...so get the extra cushion.

I'll look into those then. I believe rockers are also easier to install then a cam? I would love to run like a 13.4-13.6 in the quater.
Off subject does a ported lim do anything if not running a intercooler.

rockers are way easier than a cam to install.

ported LIM, depends what you mean. the inlet being ported does nothing without an intercooler. the runners (outlet ports) running into the heads do something if they are gasket matched to THE HEADS. if there is a step down into the heads then its pointless anyway.

What springs would be the best for the 1.9s? any better then the others? I do beat on it every once in awhile. But not as much as people think. I do take car of the car nicely.I keep up on the oil changes and all that.

Ok i'll switch that out since its not doing anything for me. The outlets are stock as stock can be. Just better flow if they are gasket matched?

While your in there I'd put in new lifters...thats just me though...stock pushrods are fine...I'd clean them if need be and put them back in. Retainers? Up to you...if your gonna go ballzy...get Manleys

dont switch out the LIM. it's a waste of time. it's fine how it is, but doesn't give any gains.

youll need the retainers that go with the springs.

While I'm in there I'll just replace the retainers as well and I'll look into those. Where can I find them at? Then just clean and new lifters.

As the lower intake manifold I'll have it off and I could prolly sell it to one of the guys around here. I know one is gonna end up turning his into a strip car. Hes gonna order a intercooler so maybe. Wish I had his bank account. lo hes a friend of mine
