cai or ram air for the GXP

i have doing some research on new a intake for my GXP and i can't make up my mind on what i want. i talking to other ls4 owners and they say that CAI's take away torque and you will gain HP, but others say that ram air adds torque but takes away HP .so i don't know what to believe, please help me out guys??

p.s.
is there any good Ram air intake's out there? i can buy and who make them?
 




No you cant IMO, thats the exact one I got and after having it I couldnt have gone with any thing else. Its very high quality and makes your car have a very loud growl from the front, but like I said it pays for itself in a couple of months with the gas savings....I think its a great product, also that is HP gain to the wheels and not to the crank.

Dude it's almost 300 bucks, not closed off to engine heat, creates more knock retard. You're paying almost 300 bucks for a intake tube and filter. You can pay 40 bucks, buy k&n filter, go to home depot, buy 4 inch abs tubing cut to the dimension you need. Buy roof flashing and close it off to the heat or run open cone. The reason the gas mileage is better is because it sucks in hot air. If you live in a winter climate have you ever wondered why you use more fuel in the winter? Cool dense air near ambient temps will always make more power.

Actually I don't get any worse gas mileage in colder temps than in hotter as far as I know, going to work would let me know that and i spend the same on gas each week either way, as far as the "custom" intake..... Idk I would much rather have the higher quality prebuilt intake system with the heat shield that does easily block the heat(u could see that if u seen it installed) than I would the other intake that could potientally damage or throw off the settings but idk I know nothing about cars, I just go for the easier and safer route when it comes to my(way too big of) investment.

good points man! for me i like K&n products and i'm not that much of a handy man when it come to those things, like BGG said i would rather get one that premade for my car. now thats not saying i have not looked for other CAI's, the problem is that there isn't any other CAI out there right now for my V8 :th_shakinghead2:.

The reason the K&N gets better mileage is because it is less of a restriction than a Delco filter, but the tradeoff is that the K&N is only about half as effective at filtering out particulate matter. It's a flow difference, and if you see more than 0.5mpg improvement some of that is because you changed the way the MAF reads and leaned out the fuel mixture. Beastly, it may also be that you are spending more time in DOD because you bumped up the power a bit. 4mpg is about in the middle of the range I've seen DOD help (from about 2mpg at 90 to 12mpg at 50).

You use more gas in the winter because of a lot of reasons. For emissions reasons, gas is reformulated in the winter with additives to keep gas from freezing and help cold starts. This lowers the amount of energy per gallon of gas. Also, it takes more gas to push through snow than it does to roll on pavement. There's actually several more reasons why mileage is worse in the winter that are related to temperature, but have nothing to do with the temperature of air going into the engine directly. I'm not arguing that colder air doesn't make more power, but that's because of better cylinder filling and better thermal efficiency. The improved thermal efficiency helps mileage a bit, but in the winter it is more than offset by the changes to gas.

My setup is from Cold Air Inductions, and does a decent job of sealing out hot engine air. It uses a K&N filter but is a little cheaper.

Some people just want the ease of it...and the warranty...or the name brand...or just don't posses the raw mechanical skills you do.

yea i couldnt find the dip stick much less make an intake, i am a gun mechanic not a car mechanic:th_nervous:


Here's my intake, quite easy to do, very simple. Cost me $66 out the door with a $10 off coupon from advance. It's 4 inch tubing with a 45 degree bend, I tried the 22.5 degree bend but the filter was to big and was hitting I believe the cruise control. I bought one 3.5 to 4in coupler, bought a 7/8's holesaw bit for IAT, came with the grommet. K&N filter 4x9 inch very pleased. I actually saw on the butt dyno you can def feel the difference. Supercharger screams like a baby. I also had a old 45 degree elbow and since my car is a 98gtp I already had the triangle duct where the guys use the roof flashing. I attatched the 45 degree bend on the inside of the fenderwell to duct cold air right to the tip of the filter. Cell phone pic sorry bout the quality.

why on earth is that people who have GTs and GTPs (that have V6s) have the need to come on to a V8 forum and tell us what to do,to our beast?
 
For my GXP, I did the K&N for a couple of reasons:

1. I work 10-12 hour a day 5 days a week, have 2 kids and just don't have time to design my own intake.

2. I make enough money that while I don't like spending $300, I can afford it if I save money for a couple of paychecks.

3. If you make it yourself, you do not get the help from K&N's lawyers if your dealer states that your intake destroyed the MAF, Cat, cam, piston's, etc. K&N's intake even has a handy 1-800 number to call if the stealership gives you hassle. I have actually used this service when a VW tech said that my K&N intake cause my cam to fail in my turbo VW, the lawyers talked to the tech and voila...warranty work with no more hassle.

4. The shield, while not blocking all heat, appears to do a fairly good job as after an hour of driving I can touch the clamp on the filter and it doesn't burn me, where as the clamp on the MAF housing does burn the hand...not one of my smarter moments.:th_shakinghead2:

5. Since there is very little support for the GXP, I have to believe that the R&D that K&N does is a little better than Joe fixit who uses PVC tubing and roof flashing to make an intake. Not banging on those that do it, more power to ya, but I am not an engineer, so I will leave the engineering to the people who know what they are doing. Just a change in materials, I think, can change the flow characteristics of the intake...but once again I am not an engineer, so that is just a guess.

because an intake is an intake and it will have the same effect on nearly all cars. granted you might gain more power due to the design of your factory intake, the theory is all the same. the K&N is highly overpriced for what it is and we are just giving examples of how to save yourself some money and still have something that is very easy to install.
