In talking to Dave and knowing a billiion people on about 6 different forums, going with anything less than a 300m/Intense turbine shaft is throwing money away. The description that a 4340 can hold up to 2-3 times stock power is ZZP poopaganda. Wanna break an input, buy a 4340...they likely break before a stocker. Want a free stocker to break, send me a pm, I have a couple spares.
Andy did a great job going over the basics of the home rebuild. I know it's here somewhere, but I got a sticky on it

A couple of things you absolutely want:
If you have an engine stand. Make a bracket.
Making sure you space it far enough from the stand so the fwd servo cover clears the stand.
Input shaft resizing sleeve: There's no way around this except sendin the piece to someone that has the tool.
Piston compressor tool: Easy to find on ebay. I found the input/3rd clutch piston required me to add some length. Tractor supply had a piece to lengthen the rod.
Beyond these tools, some freezer zip locks and trans fluid will help get all the seals etc over sharp areas. Some creativity with various tools will drive seals and all that stuff.
Get the ATSG rebuilding book.
My suggestion is to pick up an updated valve body/channel plate from Dave at TEP. It's quick and easy to bolt it on. Comes with all the updates, fresh soleniods and there's almost no worries if that stuff is right.
On parts
Automatically get the hardened 4th shaft
If you want a big build, get a 7/8" chain gearset, otherwise get fresh chains (all are V8 these days)
Updated VB
Bearings in Channel plate
While you have sent the VB/Channel plate to Dave, send him the spacer plate and ask him to hook that up as well. (Better feeding of clutch pistons)
New stator bearing (known to cause whine noise)
Any galled parts shoudl be replaced (typically sun gear in diff)
Input shaft as mentioned 300m or Turbine shaft
Talk to Dave about adding clutches/steels to reduce slop in 2nd and 3rd packs.
Clutches are highly dependent on who you talk to. I like to talk this over with Dave as well. He knows which clutches grab better under which circumstances. There's a difference...no doubt.
Transgo shift kit.
Poof, you basically have yourself a full on big baller transmission. Buy a pile of brake clean, a ton of oil absorbant, have a nice big table and a ton of clean rags. ...on an a lot of time. first time out ...it's a slow process.
