Building a new RIG

So my last build was about 10 years ago back when the old 8800 graphics cards came out lol. So my laptop is on its way out and i unearthed my old rig that was stored in my closet for the last 3 years.. i quickly realized why i put her away lol.. and so a new build was in order

Im building it with extreme multi-tasking in mind as i am a CS with focus on SWE student and about to graduate. Plus i plan to turn it into a gaming rig once i graduate as well and actually have time to play lol

Oh ya still waiting on my graphics card, SSD, and blu ray drive to get here

So heres the build list

Gigabyte X79-UD3 motherboard
Intel i7 4820k processor
Crucial Ballistix Elite 16g(2×8gb) DDR3-1866
Nvidia Geforce GTX 660 2gb graphics card
Samsung 120gb SSD
Toshiba 2TB hardive
Corsair RM750 power supply
Corsair Carbide 300R case
Coolmaster 212 Evo cpu cooler
Lg 16x blu ray drive
Lg 14x disc drive

Thanks man... what you looking to get? Its crazy how much things have changed since i built my last one haha i had to do so much research to catch up lol

Looks like a pretty solid list. What OS are you using?

I've been putting together a list for a similar build, but I'll be stuffing it all into a Silverstone SG05

Cable routing is your friend.

Any reason you went with that specific Mobo? 4 PCI 3.0 slots and 1 660?

Solid looking build though, I can vouch for the case being awesome, and the Corsair RM series PSU being top notch.

Good choice on the Hyper 212, best cooler you can get under $40.. no brainer.
Why you going with a 660? 7xx series is out... and the 8xx series is rumored on the drawing board I believe. Probably six months out tho so don't sweat that.
I need to do a new build myself soon. My 4yr old first-gen i7 is starting to become a bottleneck finally. When I update tho, definitely adding a second 120gb SSD for Raid 0... and 1x120gb is a PITA, just not enough.
i am a CS with focus on SWE student and about to graduate

Computer science student with focus in what ? Curious..

The 212 surprised me. When I went from i3 to 3570k I bought an H100i. OCed to 4.2 and stays cool. Sucks how picky IB is with just the smallest voltage change. I'm rocking a 560 Ti, torn between lowering the car or a 770 + custom liquid cooling loop haha

I've often thought about building my own, but honestly on my $600 HP machine I havnt run into a game that Im unable to run on max graphics yet. Skyrim, Dark Souls, WoW, D3, Dragon Age, Rift... it would definitely be a fun project though. I've had most of my computers apart and back together so I think I could do it, I thought about building them for profit, too, but it's probably not that simple.

I had a hard time figuring out what parts go with what, or if it even mattered... like what processor to use with what mobo, or what case to put it all in... but then again I was a lot younger when I looked into this, too.

I went with that mobo bc Micro Center had a killer combo deal got the mobo and i7 for like 400.. which that processor alone is about 320 ish. AND only 1-660 for now cause im not looking to get back into gaming just yet... trying to be good and finish up school haha plus again got it for a killer deal on Newegg

And Exile SWE= software engineering

Gigabyte is a good brand, also I think they fair better if you got bored and wanted to do a hackintosh type deal

ya Gigabyte is pretty good, also made a typo on the GC up top.. cant figure out why it wont let me change it.. as soon as i edit it goes to a blank edit box.. weird

anyway its a EVGA SC 660ti... not Nvidia lol

It's an Nvidia Reference card manufactured by EVGA. 660TI is no slouch.

That is a damn good deal on the board/CPU, what thermal paste did you end up using?

<still rocking my SLI'd 480GTX's OC'd to 900MHz Core, 1975 Memory clock on both with 1190mV going to each. Yes the top card will hit 100*C, but it just helps to heat the house.
Been benchmarking just under 11000 on 3DMark11 on performance.

You are severely limiting that board by running dual channel ram instead of quad channel, I would swap it out for a 4x4gb kit.

O OK. Don't do windows 8....its sucks monkey balls

When you put Classic Shell on it to bring back the standard start menu, it's not much different from W7. There are some annoying changes, but nothing I found that can't be solved with some minor tweaks.
