Broken tranny

My wife's 2008 chevrolet captiva sport transmission just broke today with only 36,000 miles. That model came out as the saturn vue xr I think in the U.S. and along with other models like the acadia and pontiac torrent have the same factory problem, the 3-5-R clutch wave plate breaks and causes everything else to fail. On top of that the chevrolet warranty here is only of 30,000 miles or 2 years and the repair cost is over 2000 dollars.

This is why I've never wanted to buy or own a 2000+ car from any manufacturer. They are more unreliable and the repair costs are way higher, I mean I spent 1,400 dollars to rebuild the Trans Am's 4L60E with race spec stuff including the stall converter, trans cooler, shift kit and clutches. Now we have to pay 2000+ just to rebuild this one to stock and hope it won't break again for the same reason.

Looking at my options here I'm even considering doing a 3800SC swap with the tranny of course and sell the 3.6 vvt engine. I wonder how hard would it be and if it would work. The current engine is supposed to put out 240 hp, but that's N/A and at this altitude I don't think it's anywhere near that and the mileage is not that great either, at least the stock GTP had better mileage lol. Plus I would add some stuff to the SC engine, like an intercooler and headers.

I know what it takes to make a 3800 work, but I'm not sure what parts of the SUV depend on the stock PCM that would no longer work.

Youll need to modify a harness and get some custom programming. Best thing to do is go to the jy and see what 3800 cars have somewhat similar engine bays

Those 3.6 vvt's are junk, hate them things.

They will someday die from the timing chain problem anyway, and there arent many other motors out that just cook that oil, it's like even on a 3-4k mile oil change it's just black as hell and smells/feels burnt.

Sucks that the tranny died, but I sounds like way more work to swap motors and likely nothing else would work at all. It's prolly a can bus car and it has a BCM and a TCM that must talk with the PCM to allow other functions inside the vehicle to work correctly.

They sell those captiva's as used fleet cars here (though I'm sure you can get a new one from some dealers) as saturn went away in 09

You're probably right, nothing else may work without the original PCM. I want to talk my wife into selling it and getting a 05-07 CTS V as a family car, but she want's an SUV... pffft.
