Broken forward band issue or dead solenoid?

I backed out of a parking space the other day and when I put the car (2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP) back in drive I heard a loud pop from the right front area of the vehicle. And then I noticed I couldn't move forward and it didn't feel like the transmission was engaging. So put it back in park, then shifted back to drive again. Still nothing.

At this point I was about to be blocking the intersection, but then I remembered the manual mode for tapshift. It clunked into 1st and I was able to drive away. I was in town where speed limits are under 35 mph, so only made it up to third. I made it back to the parking garage at the office, but the climb up the ramp in 1st gear was labored with lots of shuddering.

I did an overhaul back in December 2012 and it's been on the road until this week. Almost got another 5 years out of it and I'd love to get a couple more.

I was thinking broken forward band since they are original and that's probably the sound I heard. I didn't swap any of the bands out because they looked OK during the overhaul and I had other damage to the final drive area that got most of my attention (and budget at the time).

I checked the shifter cable and the range switch. They both look like they're functioning as designed. Reverse still works. I've parked it for the moment until I have time to fully diagnose.

Is it weird that I have no forward motion in Drive, but the car moves in manual/1st?

If anyone has any insight it would be much appreciated. I'm scratching my head on this one.

I'm going to tear into it when I get done traveling for work after Thanksgiving.

Thanks in advance.

Seems like the band. How long could you nurse this along by starting in 1st all the time and then shift up??

If it's acting like mine did, and it sounds like it is, not long. When Rick came to get my car when he bought it we had a hell of a time getting it loaded on the dolly. Once there was any kind of incline it would slip horribly in first. On a flat it would take off easily. I nursed it to get home from work and to and from the bowling alley that night and realized quickly it wasnt going to be viable to drive in that condition. The next day hi bought another car.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback and the part upgrade recommendation. Much appreciated. I guess I'll get to work on the rebuild asap.
