Brighter Fog lights?

Idea: Replace 880 bulb with 899 bulb.

Its the same form factor, longer life (2000 hours versus 300 of stock), 37.5 watt instead of 32 and its 33% brighter.

Whats not to like?

From Sylvania's website:
"Do not operate over 110% rated voltage because such operation increases pressure and lamps' tendency to shatter."

Yet the stock bulbs are rated for 12.8 volts and the "brighter" ones are rated for 12 volts... Might this be where the tendency to fail more often lay?

FYI: 12.8 V *1.1= 14.1 V yet 12 V *1.1= 13.2 V

Clearly they should fail if your car is humming along at 13.6 volts.

Is this not the same issue with "brighter" aftermarkets such as the silverstars?

Also, would not the headlights be made of the same plastic as the foglights to save on cost and therefore able to handle the extra heat output?

Same plastic? Quite possibly - but, with the headlights you don't have the same proximity from lense to bulb - and you have more internal volume with which to dissipate the heat in the headlight capsule. Now how much of that is cancelled out due to the much higher wattage of a headlight bulb vs foglight? I don't do math. But, I've seen many fog light housings/lenses melted from useing a higher wattage bulb in the stock housing. I switched mine out to Blazertechs, and ran 55W halogen bulbs. :th_thumbsup-wink:

All of that being said - I don't know that you would have a problem with what you're proposing - it's a negligible increase, and the voltage issue is valid.

Meh, not interested in HID's. Illegal and seem like more work and money than they're worth. Also an annoyance to other drivers since they're not designed properly.

The volume issue isn't necessarily the worst thing in the world, I'm only looking at 37.5 watts here. I want some lifetime with these bulbs too. :p

I had those, and was very happy with them. They're fairly easy to install (about as easy as any aftermarket foglight). What I like most about them is the beam pattern. They have a low, wide beam pattern like a foglight should.
