Breaking in a new engine, have question

most fresh rebuilds will smoke when you first start it, its all the lube burning off from assembly.

smells good for about a week or so, once you smell that smell, you can tell if some one just did a rebuild just by walking up on it idling and smelling the exhaust.

not that its still smoking, but it carry's the smell for a while.

and like i said it either runs or blows up, babying it wont make it last longer at all. if there's a problem you should know about it real fast at first start up. if its all smooth running and no leaks its time to go for a ride.

i do like to wait till the first 500 miles and first oil change are done till i'd beat the tar out of it. but dont be scared to get on it some right out of the box so to say.

do make sure you pull the fuel pump relay, or coils, and crank the engine a bunch of times. if you have a oil pressure gauge make sure its building oil pressure before you fire it up, a dry start can lead to a quick death.

aka prime the oil pump.

you dont want all the money to waste with that scenario.

fill the oil filter with oil too.

You dont need assembly lube or high zinc oil. And beat on it as soon as the oil is warm.

You dont need to idle the thing high for a half an hour either because its a roller cam, not a flat tappet.

As others have said, if its going to fail it will regardless of how you drive it.

Thrashing it when warm is supposed to seat the rings better than babying it.

Thanks Matt, I will have it on the road anyday. Motor is built, just got to fill it full of fluids, plugs and wires, done! thanks to all

For cranking to build oil pressure. I hook everything up. Then I remove the connector at the ICM. That disables start/spark. The little fuel that is primed in ..isn't an issue.
