Brake won't disengage

So my car, ever since I bought it did this cool little thing where it randomly wouldn't disengage. I undid the boot and the staple thing holding the shifter in place. Then I would pull the shifter knob up and down until finally it would allow it to disengage and I could then shift it out of park.
Today, however, I went to park the car on a slant to go to class and it wouldn't allow the key to turn backwards enough for me to pull it out. So I went to move the car and it wouldn't disengage the brake at all. I now have to push down the button beside the shifter with a pen for it to shift. And the key still won't unlock for me to pull it out. Any advice?

Under the steering wheel is a small cover, pop that out with a small screw driver and stick it up in there and it will push in a thingy and let the key come out.

Lol alright. I will look for the small thingy to press once I get back out to the car. Thank you! But what do I need to do to fix it so this issue doesn't happen again and so that my car will shift out of park without having to push in the button next to the shifter? =/

You can also get a piece of hose cut it open and jam it between the button and the plastic cover. That will also keep the button depressed.

I did this on my GP too. I just pressed the button every time. You can tilt the column up and reach over the plastic to get to the button too.

Psst that's a copywritten move. You owe me $5 per time you say that.

Open the console and look for a cut wire. Crbquist had this issue and recently posted in a thread about someone else having the issue. I mention him because he isn't a post whore like some of us and you'll be able to find the thread
