Brake Ticking?? new pads, no change.. WTF!!

I noticed today while driving that when I hit my brakes I hear a slight ticking. As the car slows down so do the ticking. It sounds like a card in bicycle spokes. It doesnt do it on acceleration, turning, coasting, etc. Only while braking. Does anyone have any ideas of what this may be?

Ok.. check those little metal pieces that hold the pad, check the rotors, look it all over and likely you'll find it.

They are sending me new pads. So I will wait to tear into the car until I get those. Should be a weekend project.
 
Changed the pads today, made sure the clips and brackets were all correct (from what I could tell) and it is still doing it. WTF?

Is there something else that can cause this issue? I think it is only during braking, it definitely gets louder when applying the brakes.

Any other thoughts?
 


They are sending me new front rotors now lol. If that doesnt fix it, then I guess the car will be going to the shop.
 
stuid question, do you use that brake pad grease or whatever ur suppose to grease the backside of the pad with?
 


I figured cross drilled and slotted. I've experienced and heard the same thing on a couple of different vehicles. The "card in bicycle spokes" analogy is exactly how i would explain it. Probably only noticable when you are next to something that reflects the sound like a fence or building otherwise you can hardly notice it just driving on the streets?

This is normal and I wouldn't worry.

I'm surprised the company is sending you new parts based on the symptoms. It is very common.
 
Well, I got new front pads and rotors out of the deal haha. I only hear it with the radio and windows down lol. So I will put new parts on and go from there lol. And I can hear it regardless of where my car is.
 
Just a thought-don't know anything about the emergency brakes in these cars as it's my first GM ever. But I had an 03 Ford F-150 that had same issue. Turned out to be the emergency brake pad in the rear had completely fallen off the metal and was ticking on the inside of the brake rotor. Like I said, I don't know how these e brakes work, but with the F-150 the emergency brake shoe was on the inside of the rear rotor. So just something to check if you haven't found it yet....
 


jack the car up and spin the back wheels to see if it makes the noise, before you take it all apart, once the tire is off everything is loose and it could be hard to hear anything.

applying the regular brakes has nothing to do with the e brake though.


the E brake looks like a set of old style drum brakes, you have a star wheel to adjust them in or out as needed., or you could have a busted spring that holds the e brake shoes in place.

to get to the e brake you need to take off the caliper bracket then the rotor, and they are inside the back of the rotor bolted to the backing plate.

this has been going on for some time now hasn't it? good luck getting it found. friggin gremlins suck.
 
also check and make sure your pads are not loose inside the bracked. try to rotate them, if there is play then the pads are the cause this does happen a lot. also if it is too tough to insert or remove the pads this could be casusing it aswell. the ticking noises usually come from the pads moving around inside the shims.
 
also the caliper bolts, take them out and clean them and the bolt hole they go in, flush it out with brake cleaner, and re grease with synthetic brake grease, autozone sells in little ketchup packs at the register. ( work the grease into the hole with the caliper bolt, use plenty of grease) and grease where the pads hook into the caliper bracket as well, do this for all 4 brakes.
