Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Brake repair

you can look on craigslist . sometimes backyard mechanics advertise there services there in the services section

Trying to think of the fact that you are in Canada and parts cost about double, I don't think I can get to $1600 in parts and labor for doing every line, every caliper and every rotor/pads etc.

Guys, other than the video I think you are barraging her with too much information. Sure brake job is straight forward once you've done it but the first time is an unknown unless you have someone to walk through it with you. Or a good how-to.

Selyse, watch the video and see what you think. Do you have tools and a place to work on your car? Are you mechanically inclined and interested in doing the work yourself? If you don't want anything to do with repairing yourself, your only option may be to pay what the shop is charging. Although, you can save a lot of money by learning and repairing yourself.

There are a lot of helpful and knowledgeable people on here - sometimes they have so many experiences under their belt, they forget how foreign a brake job can be to someone new.

Best of luck to you!

we all dove in knowing nothing at some point, didnt we? only difference is in the 80's i had no internet lol we learned at the junk yard pulling parts off there first, now you know how it comes apart and you can do your own car.

i used to check out chiltons manuals from the public library for gods sake lol

my main reason for doing my own work was to not pay the shops all that money. once i found out what parts cost in hand vs the shop price, i was doing all i could myself.

and i no longer had to drop the car off for days to a week and wait for it.

I fully support people doing work themselves and all the benefits that come along with it. Including learning through mistakes.

You say we are overloading? Tell that to my friend Rachael.

She asked about maintenance on her car when she was 18-19, guys on a forum said, "you can't do anything, you are a girl". I sent a pm saying what she needed for the spark plug change she wanted to do. She did that plug change, not long after I walked her through a water pump swap in the winter of Ohio with sleet and freezing rain falling. That pump was on a Bonneville with a motor mount bracket in front of it. She did that and learned a valuable lesson about cleaning gasket surfaces (got to do it again). I was in person to help with a motor swap that included Plog and rockers etc, she then bought a car with a bad motor and swapped it herself.

Women in general can learn faster than men and grasp concepts quicker as well. Only thing they might lack is the same muscle level and tools in a box.

Thinking of this job.. what's needed?
A few wrenches (one set would do the trick)
19mm socket and breaker bar
Maybe a line bender (but if you spend the extra for NiCopp line, you don't need a bender)
Double flare tool
Once you get any leaking lines replaced then I'd start looking at the rotors and calipers and doing a brake bleeding.

Scott linked a nice handy nearly free bleeder made out of a bottle

IMO there's very little there a woman willing to do some work couldn't do totally on her own.

Can you explain what portion of a brake job a woman willing to work could not do? Then go tell that to Rachel and see what she says. Can you believe you wrote this? Haha.

Back to the main point, I haven't seen anything in this thread even hinting Selyse wants to do the work herself. She wanted to know if $1600 was a fair price.
