Boring but necessary - Stud replacement

Hey guys, just ordered new studs and lugs for my front passenger tire, as the ones on there are all stripped. Whats the easiest way to get the old studs off? I've never done it before and any tips are appreciated. Thanks!

Off is easy. Whack them with a big f'n hammer straight backwards. They'll pop out. The new ones should be able to be slid in. If not, you might find grinding one small edge of the back piece flat does the trick. Then use some spacers and a spare lug nut to yank them back into place.

Re: Boring but necessary

I always eschewed using a hammer for fear of damaging the hub, am I being paranoid?

I've heard putting the new studs in the freezer before install is a good idea, this way they are smaller and slip on easier.

Re: Boring but necessary

I would have just got a new hub, but yeah do what bill said that is how I always do them.

Re: Boring but necessary

I would have just got a new hub,

I like the way you think...but axle nut plus the three hub bolts vs 5 studs. Seems like it's only saving 1 item. Unless the hub has to slide forward to get the studs in.. then it's a no brainer HUB. :th_biggrin2:

Im not sure if you have to slid the hub forward on these, but broken studs leads me to believe original hub that is going to fail soon anyways so why waste time and money on studs. I could swap out the hub in a lot less time then fighting putting in studs.

studs are 5 bucks. a hub is 75. thats honestly what it came down to. and the studs arent broken they're just stripped. I just had them checked and the hub on that side is fine. the other side is loose, and it'll be replaced next check : )
