Re: Bolt size thread

Note: All bolts with an additional torque or degrees (*) are torque to yield bolts will will need to be replaced after removal. Also all specs are done usings a good torque wrench and torque angle meter. Not your grand pas wrench from 1944 that has never been checked since the 50's.

A/C compressor front nuts 100 N.m (74 lb ft) .
A/C compressor rear bolts 31 N.m (23 lb ft) .
Camshaft Sprocket Bolt First Pass 74 lb. ft. Final Pass + 90°
Connecting Rod Cap Bolt 20 ft.lb +50*
crankshaft balancer bolt 150 Nm (111 ft. lbs.) + 76*
Crankshaft Main Bearing Cap Bolt 30 ft. lbs. \ +110*
Crankshaft Main Bearing Cap Bolt (Side) 11 ft. lbs. +45*
Comp Cams rocker bolts 23 lb ft.
EGR Valve37 lb. ft.

Exhaust Manifold Bolt/Nut 22 lb. ft.
exhaust manifold pipe stud nuts 32 Nm (24 ft. lbs.)
exhaust crossover pipe bolts and studs 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
Flywheel Bolts11 lb. ft. +50*
front head First pass 37 lb. ft. Second pass +120* Final pass +30*(only 96-01 cars inner 4 bolts) When using head studs work your way up to 90ftlbs using the same picture, I did three passes on mine. 30-60-90

hub bolts=1/2"

Fronts are, rears are different... I did one of my rears yesterday and it was 10mm(not 3/8's) for the hub with like maybe a t25(?) to get the ebrake junk off to get it out

Re: Bolt size thread

Oh and add that the egr hose bolts are 3/8's too, cause I rounded one off on the exhaust manifold of a buddies car the other day using a 10mm and some brute force. Oh how I loved drilling that one out...

Re: Bolt size thread

This thread was my idea, Nick just provided the information.

Typically where you see 13mm above, 1/2" will fit better.

Re: Bolt size thread

Never stripped one on my many builds, just use good sockets and you will be fine.

Truth. Although even a good Snappy 6 pointer can occasionally round out some of the bolts. Not often though. Oh yeah..and Nick. Having air keeps the hand ratchet from twisting off the bolt head. Most won't have air.

I absolutely don't know what I did before the 3/8" ingersol titanium came into my life.

Re: Bolt size thread

My son just bought a 1997 Grand Prix GTP. What is the size of the Valve cover bolts? There is one missing on the front cover, and the threads are stripped. I want to use a Helicoil to fix it, but I need to know what size I need. It's a great car otherwise. Thank you for the help :)

The bolt itself is 1" long from tip to the bottom of the flange and is a 3/8" head. It has a non removable (as far as I can tell) metal washer and stem that hold the rubber grommet on it. It is a 1/4" shank with a 1/4"x20 thread.

Thank you for the information. I went to the junk yard and picked one up for $1.75. It went on and has stayed on tight for two weeks now, no oil leak either :)

by any chance does anyone have the bolt size for the CV axle, passenger side? the 5 bolts that bolt the inner joint to the trans

yes it its held onto the shaft with a c-clip. just use a pry bar and push on the back of the axle, rotate and try again if it doesnt pop right out.

good how to: Installation of new Half-Shafts

Awesome - I was about to look up the torque specs for the knock sensor again when I came across this! Thanks!
