Yup...exactly.

The E39 M5 is great...until the Vanos repairs occur.

Get the old 4.4 that is bulletproof and supercharge it.
 


E39 M5 is my favorite M5.

While I agree with you, in the sense that it was the last real pure BMW M5, you wouldn't want to own it. The oil changes alone are $100...in oil.

That is why you buy the 540, do a little work here and there and while not a total match in power (unless you supercharge it), it is just as fun for fraction of the cost.

Not denying that they're more too maintain and have their own little niggles, would still drive one to work every day with a raging hard on though. Any M car.
