Blower motor squeal and...

Buggsy

New member
This winter I have had a few days were the blower motor sounded like it was ripping a rodent in half. Just this tortured scream. But it only did this for about 2 seconds. Lately, I've been hearing an additional squeal from the dash/blower motor area. The odd thing is that the sound isn't directly tied to the speed of the blower. It sounds the same between 1/3 and 2/3 speed, but it also goes away when I turn the blower off.

Before I order up a new blower motor, I wanted to make sure that there isn't some other fan or something in the dash.

2004 GP GT.

Thanks.

Same thing happens to me, but it doesnt happen every time i turn the fans on. some times its spontaneous when the fans on, other times its when i hit a bump or accelerate quickly n the fans are on at the time. I was thinking about replacing the blower motor soon but I too would like to know the possibilities. Figures, during the winter my blower motor takes a crap, and during the summer my ac takes a crap. Go freaking figure.

I found this in the how-to's. I thought about trying to lube mine up, but the start up sound isn't a squeak, its more like a screech. Bad time of the year to potentially lose the motor. And in fairness, I've oiled a lot of fans for PCs and it never lasts.

For $75, I like the peace of mind. In related news, the high today is -2 F. The low is -19 F. That's without the windchill.

Mine screams everytime I start the car for about 5-10 minutes depending on what speed its set at, it takes a while for it to get warm enough, then it stops screaming and actually starts to spin. I am more than positive the bearings are shot and prevent it from spinning while cold. Your's will likely end up the same way after some time.

Damn, I might need a resister pack now too. On the way home last night, the fan speed started to vary up and down. Now this morning it only works on full. Anything less than 3 clicks from full speed is pretty much off. And full speed is really about the same as half speed was. If I slow the fan down, I hear something dragging inside the squirrel cage. I'll pop out my air filter to make sure there isn't something in there.

Does that sound like the resister pack to you all too?

Sqealing = rotational resistance = bad bearings = soon to be bad resistor pack.

The resistor packs are rated for a certain ammount of current. When the blower starts to go bad they can take them out as well. :)

My wife told me that after she dropped me off for work, the blower quit entirely. That sucks. It's -12 F right now and this isn't an in-stock part. And I'm suppose to drop the car off at the transmission place tomorrow to get the crappy 4th gear replaced as my car has been shifting damn hard the last few days. That's going to make for a couple of long cold rides.

I've not seen the blower motor yet. Is there anything I can do in the parking lot to "jumper" the blower on full speed or something? I don't think it's seized up, it was behaving like the voltage was dropping.
