Blower Motor Resistor

I know the Blower Motor Resistor is pretty much plug and play and I have replaced them on other cars but to save alot of time and hassle of poking around everywhere can anyone tell me where the Blower Motor Resistor is located on a 1997 GTP it would be greatly appreciated

As far as my "flicker" I have when I open the door I was checking out the car and I noticed that the driver side door panel the last clip on the towards the back was not totally clipped on and the window motor rolls up and down like an aftermarket motor when you change the directions it is kind of harsh not smooth like a factory motor

If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated:th_king-normal:

I dont have anything to offer on the window, but on the blower motor resistor, its on the passenger side. If you look under where the glove box is you'll see the blower motor there in the corner closest to the firewall and to the center console.

I will give you this advice. Be SURE to get you a flex driver. One of those drivers that has the flex shaft on it, I dont remember the size of the bolt 3/32, 5/32 something like that. But if you dont get that flex shaft driver, you can just hang up your boots now cause that one bolt holding in the blower motor resistor is so close to the floor board where it slopes you wont be able to get a normal socket or driver on it. At least I could not on my vehicle.

Re: Blower Motor Resistor Replacement

Need to replace Resistor on a 2002 (just finished installing the Water Diverter from Abrasive). This job looks really tough because of it's placement so close to the firewall (special tools, laying on your back etc.). Is it possible to disconnect the plug in wire (2)harnesses and then connect them to a new resister mount and leave the new one unmounted off of the blower motor in case it needs to be replaced again (new one could hang off the blower motor and the old one would remain mounted on the blower motor)
Thanks,
greg

You can probably do that, but how safe it would be is another question. That thing is designed to dissipate some heat, so my concern would it be getting against something that would burn or worse catch fire. Furthermore, its placement in the blower motor housing would suggest that it probably uses some of the air blowing around from the heater to cool itself so that would lead me to believe it may self-destruct if it didnt have that cooling.

from my experience with my cavalier, you are exactly right scotty. it is located where its at so the blower motor can cool it down. i had a hard time replacing mine on my cavalier so i just left it hanging there and wrapped some electrical tape around it. i had the heater on for about 30 seconds before the tape started smoking. those things get VERY hot

Have the same problem with my 2002 Grand Prix. Would like to hear from others who have the easiest way to do this. Shortcuts to make this horrible job doable would be most welcome!

I have a 2002 and did mine last month. Not too fun due to the uncomfortable position but not difficult either. I pulled my blower motor out to get better access to the resistor. There is 3 bolts that hold in the blower. I believe the resistor has 3 bolts as well and you can just loosen the ones on the firewall side due to the resistor being slotted so it will slide in instead of having to take the bolts right out. It is a bit of a pain due to laying on your back, especially me being 6'8 but I did it in no more than half an hour and alot of that time was spent trying to get more comfortable, haha. Good luck!

I just loosened the the two bolts closest to the driver's side and grabbed it with a pair of pliers and ripped it out then loosened the bolt in the way back a lot and put the new one in. I just tightened the two bolts again and left it at that.

thanks for the tip. i did as u said and got it out. days ago my fan only worked on the high setting, which led me here. yesterday the fan when turned on high would go on, then die down. i could here it trying to get going but nothing. if i shut it off then back on once in a while the fan would start again.

would this be caused by the blown resistor? (it was clearly toast) or could this also mean that the blower motor is toast too?

thoughts?

thanks for the help this far

Wow, this forum has a lot of help. Thanks for the posts!! I'm replacing the resistor on my 2000 Grand Prix. I was finally, after a few choice words, able to get the one screw against the firewall removed, but the resistor is still next to impossible to rip out. Did you guys have to essentially destroy the old resistor to get it out?

this is by far the best way. your not gona use the old one if you f it up any how. I dont even remember if i re tightened the one closest to the firewall after I put mine in. i dont think i did and its been runnin like a champ for like 9 mounts

Did this myself a few months back and you do have to be a contortionist. Don't feel bad about destroying the old resistor when removing it, he can't feel a thing, he's dead. I believe the new one is also better quality that the one that came on my 97, does anyone know when the design was improved?

Idk the awsner to that question but you are diffinatly right. the origional on in my 03 was way different then the one that i put in. looking at it it looks like a lot better design but that is just my oppion

Does anyone know why my fans stay on when the car is off? It has started doing this a day or two after I replaced the blower motor resistor.

The heater blower on my 2001 GP quit working on setting #1 last year, but all other speeds worked fine. Today the speed fluctuated a couple of times while on setting #2, and now it will only blow air on settings #3-5. They are predicting more severe weather this weekend, and I will be screwed if the blower takes a dump & cannot defrost my windows while driving. Do I replace the blower or the resistor? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
