Big Rims (Not trying to cause a problem)

I see that the last thread was closed... not trying to start any problems or anything. I just wanted to state that I do like big wheels.... to a point. I am rarely a fan of lifted vehicles, except for a select few SUVs around here with 30s (escalade esv, suburban, excursion, etc.) On the 2004+ GP, I honestly love the way 22s look on them. As for the 97-03, 22s can look good with a careful wheel selection. Honestly, I had 20s on my 98 Monte Carlo, and I sold them because they began to look too small to me. Just my opinion, and I realize that I'm part of the minority here.

Edit: found a pic... the 20s just didn't fill the wheel well enough for me.

Edit on the edit lol: in this pic, the front wheels do look nicely tucked... sloped driveway ftw. On flat land, the wheel gap was killing me.

The problem I find with this is that you don't always need bigger rims to fill up the wheel gaps. If you lower your vehicle, the rims will look much larger, therefore no need for big rims. Honestly, I'll pick a lowered car over one with unproportional rims all day.
 
True, but lowering the monte would be a problem as there is already extra weight added from my stereo equipment. If I had a z34, or if my GP was a GTP, I could see performance-oriented mods such as lowering it. However, for my purposes and style, I simply like big wheels.
 
You like big wheels, we get it slap on your car whatever you please.
why should anyone care what we think about your ride?

You could get different springs to solve ass sag from stereo equipment. Many have done it before. And besides, not everyone lowers for performance gains, I mean there are some.. but some people simply like it for their 'style' like you do.

I just don't like seeing cars with more ground clearance then SUV's.

Agreed... lift kits are more often than not a horrible addition to a car. My big rim addiction is limited to stock suspension only when it comes to passenger cars.
 


the problem is that you cant go over the stock overall diameter with a set of wheels. you have to buy the right sized tires to keep the overall diameter. no one does this because 20 series tires are redonkulously expensive.

i am always a fan of lowered cars on big wheels so long as they are the right style and fit the car. not just a giant flashy wheels to show how much money you can spend on a set of wheels.
 
Big rimzzz ruin transmissions. Then when they get sold or repo'd, the next owner buys the car with stock wheels unknowing that the trans is shot and has to dump money into the car.
 
Something else about big wheels, WEIGHT.

I recently had 18s on my Saab, 10lbs a wheel heavier then stock. Man did it slow the car down, I felt like I had no low end at all. Not only that, I noticed my brakes sucked, the ride quality sucked and I had more road noise.

I prefer Function > Form

I'm back on the 16s now and I feel that if you have to get a tire with less than a 40-45 series tire. Your wheels are too big.

Lol... that seems to about sum up the general consensus here. Indeed... unsprung weight and people running huge wheels on stock brakes is rather disconcerting. In any case, thank you all for your opinions.

there is a certain extent of stretch that i dont like. im cool with people doing it because they can get stupid low and it looks great when done right. i just dont think its practical for a car you drive that often.

however, i wouldnt be afraid to put a 225 on a 9 or 10 inch wheel. most of you will shudder at that, but if you do the math it really isnt that bad. domestic guys like fat, useless tires. what can i say?
 
It's all about the rims when people do this..it isn't about improved performance, or improving the look of the car alone.

That Monte you have pictured isn't bad, I have seen worse, but I don't think that those rims would look good even normal sized.

I don't understand why some people think putting 22s+ on an ugly car, like a first generation Intrepid (a common example), look good. There is NO visually appealing flow that matches the car with rims that big..let alone the rims, despite the size..which is naturally why most people find it to be ugly.
 
Like Drunkie said. The brakes were worse when he had the larger wheels. This is because the brakes are designed for a smaller wheel. When you put larger wheels on, the heat needed for the brakes to function properly isn't there because there's a larger area for them to cool. Yes, brakes need a certain amount of heat to work properly, cooler isn't always better. Besides that, larger wheels are money pits.
 


I think if it looks good to u then do it, it's ur car. I had 22s on my car when i first got it (see pic) . i got compliments on it all the time, especially after i painted it. I didnt use a lift kit, just spacers enough to clear the wheels...i hate wheel gap as much as i hate stock rims. i was gonna do 19s and lower it, but didnt like the look once i put the rims on....so i sold those. but i feel if ur not looking for show over go, do big rims, if not, big rims are a no no
