beginning turbo setup

Ok, so now i got my 03 LE out the shop i can begin putting together the 00 GT coupe. So far i got a z7 dp, xpz cam and hv insert. Looking to cut cost wherever possible. I know that this isnt a cheap project, but when i can save i plan on doing so. I wanted to grab the z3 crossover or have one made. Will it work with the z7 DP?

Turbo-wise i was thinkin of a Holset HX35 or 40, depending on what i can find. Oil kit will be from ZZP, head work for the cam will be local. blow off, wastegate, and intercooler from ebay nothin fancy. Injectors from what i been reading 60# is the standard, but could i get away with 42's?

I know all this will have to be tuned, no i dont have a wideband yet. Looking to have it all done by World Cup Finals in November. I would like to see high 11's with this project. Is this possible or im i going crazy.

11s should be cake. Cheap turbo setups are all about knowing where exactly its ok to cut costs.

eBay GODZILLA turbos. They are what a well known individual runs, since master power went out of business. The T76 I was looking at for my Monte Carlo was $300 shipped. I say was, because I think I'm going to go bigger (Because LSx)

Make your own crossover and downpipe.

Don't cut costs on your wastegate and BOV. Tial would be a good choice for those.

Get a good intercooler. Research pressure drops and see what's going to be best for your goals.

Go with the 60# injectors and run ethanol if you can. It'll help keep things cooler and make more power.

Don't forget a catch can or Air/Oil seperator.



Also, don't forget to get a built trans. That's the most important part in turboing a grand prix, and the most expensive.
 
Dont hear much about E85 here in MD
I figured 60# injectors were the way to go, i'll pick some up from somebody demoding.
I got a local shop that told me the crossover fab would not be a problem. He recently finished up a fox body mustang turbo setup, looks damn good too.
I heard the ebay turbos were not very good dont hold up as well over time. i.e, u get what u pay for. This wont be my only car, so if it goes down im not hurting for transport. just wanna do it right the first time.
Same guy who can fab the crossover does trans rebuilds so, i got that covered as well.
 
Sometimes I forget that E-85 is a midwest thing... It sounds like you're pretty much set though.

With the eBay turbos, a lot has changed in the past several years. Now a days they are almost exact knock offs of the real deal. The guy I was talking about is Parish8. He had the worlds fastest 99+ Silverado, Second Fastest G8, a rear mount turbo lexus and has made multiple appearances on Hot Rod Magazine's drag week. The godzilla is exactly what he used on his lexus, and he had it tubo'd for about a year before selling the car, and it's what he reccomended to me. The G8 had a Masterpower, which was about a $500 turbo when they were around. A lot of people that used to use Masterpower use Magnum now, since they're pretty much the same thing.
 
The motor making enough power for 11's is cake. The tranny & getting enough traction will be more difficult.
 
Z3 crossover will not work with Z7 downpipe due to the different wastegate locations.

Holset turbo setups have been done before and ppl have had no issues running them. Personally I'd avoid some of the ebay stuff as a lot of ppl have had great success but even bigger failures.

One suggestion that I'd make is to sell the XPZ cam and put in a turbo cam or even run a set of 1.9's instead of throwing a cam in the car. Saves money on head work and gaskets. Turbo setups on 1.9's with stock heads have been in the 500whp territory so it's all a matter of where you want to spend your money.

60's are the standard, don't even mess with the 42's. If you plan on running E85 80's are the standard.
 


I havent looked at the DP in a while, but doesnt it have a perch for the wastegate already made there for it?
Im gonna have to check. i really have no desire to break apart the motor for a cam install. I got it for a good
so i was just holding it in hopes i would get around to it one day. Although i realize that a good bit of planning
goes into a cam that size. I could get away wit rockers and still be at or around the power goals that im
shooting for then expect to be seeing a for sale post within the next few hours.
 
coo, so i just put up the for sale post on the cam to help buy the rockers. Got some heads from my buddy
may still take them in to get p&p, figure any type of increased flow will help out
 


Personally I'd buy the best turbo you can afford and build your setup around that.
The HX35 is not a good fit and running 93 octane on a stock motor with 1.9s you'll be lucky to break ~320-330whp.
I've never seen an all stock motor with just 1.9s come even close to 500whp, even on e85 or race gas. People say they've done it but there's never been any documented proof.
I call them on it but never do we see proof.

Anyhow... don't get stars in your eyes, have realistic goals (11s is a good start). Spend money on the turbo, I wouldn't trust an ebay turbo, they are inferior. Anyone who said they make awesome power with one, will make more with a real one, and it'll last longer.

I'd go with a turbo cam and a 67 from a good company.
You really can't go wrong with a comp or precision turbo. I got my billet wheel 6765 from Comp for $800.
If I had to do it again I'd go with their oil-less turbo too... it'll save you the money and hassle of buying/installing an oil kit.
I have the zzp oil return and it's always leaking. I'm upgrading to stainless line. I'm gonna be in $150-200 before it's all said and done, along with a few hours of labor.

From there, 93 octane and ~15-16 psi and you'll make 430-450whp (3" down pipe and a good exhaust, more with open DP)
11s should be EZ at that point.

word. so that would put me at around the 1/4 im looking for? I've been researching for some time now.
think its time i make my move. so, leave the 1.9 idea behind? I checked clubgp and people were running
decent numbers with 1.9's, IC, stock heads. I realize that every car is different, but i shouldnt be to far
behind with the plans that i've got.
 
You'll have enough power to run 10s (with what I recommended) if you took some weight out and could cut 1.6-1.7 60s.
 


I wouldn't bother with 1.9's and go with a cam of some kind. Its one thing I regretted not doing on my turbo car. If I had to do it all over again I would go with a Stamatta cam.
 
I persoanlly have a holset hx35 I however haven't really ran it yet but my car is getting built now including trans. So we will see how it goes and I can let you know. I am trying to figure out the injector thing though I thought that 60# would be fine even on E85 so idk.
 
Thats cool. My buddy who was handling the 03 motor swap flaked on me and started building his impala. Although mine was there first...but the H1C another friend of mine has may be what i end up goin with
