begining to overheat

so i notice some odd noises coming from my car, swear under my breath a couple of times and keep driving. about 10 minutes later at a stop light i notice my temp. is up to about 245-250. HOLY SH!T :th_angry1: so i start to drive and it instantly cools down to about 215-220ish. long story short it stayed pretty much between 210 and 250 between stop and go, 30mph, and 70 mph on the highway. and it would flucuate like crazy. i can look at it for literally no more than 10 seconds and it would go from 210 to 250 or viseversa. now for about the last week my low coolant light has been coming on but didnt when i noticed this happening. so obviously time for a coolant flush/top off but is it possible a sensor is bad or i have more issues beyond just these?
 


Yep, mine did that earlier this week, GF was driving the car, and a hose broke (overflow hose) which let coolant leak out whenever it was at operating temp (usually 185ish)
I took it for a spin after putting a new hose in it, and it did the same thing you're talking about.

All I did was flush the system, and fill'er up, and its been perfect since.
 
my dad said to flush it but to bring it somewhere and do it so it looks like thats what i'll do. and there must've been a leak because there is sealent dumped in there from the previous owner. im just gonna bring it somewhere and have it done so it gets everything flushed out, in the block and stuff, not just the radiator. is that what you did? i just dont wanna spend the money
 


No, I did mine myself. I used a high pressure hose attached to a heater core line, with the heater on full blast. It cleans everything out really nice, and is essentially free.
 
well heres the update so far, i poured in a bunch of coolant, the temp. problem seems for now to be fixes. it didnt top 210 at all and was mostly at about 190 or so.however the noise is still there and seemed to have gotten a little worse. its a really weird sound, its almost like i tick or a tisk its really hard to describe tho. you can hear it at idle with the hood up and if your looking at the engine it sounds like its coming from the back left, so by the belt. my dad said it might be my power steering pump, which has always made noises but that i think is just because the fluid was a little low. when im driving its loud enough to hear from inside the cabin and i noticed when i accelerate or am on the pedal it seems to get a little bit louder. any idea on what that can be?
 
the thing is its not constant, wouldnt that be constant? and i doubt its a exhaust leak my fuel mmileage hasnt dropped of any
 
depends on how much its leaking. you can take the belt off and turn on the engine. if it still makes the noise then you know its none of the accessories. you gotta think of the part of the engine that would make a ticking or tisking sound. Does the computer throw a misfire code?
 


i dont know, how do i even get that checked? just go to autozone and say "hey, scan my car for a code" ? is that a free service they offer?
 
If not an exhaust leak, then it could be a lifter ticking - not too uncommon after several years of service if the valves haven't ever been adjusted. Not sure how easy it is to do on these motors, sitting in there sideways, but you might try to pop the valve cover off you're hearing the noise from and start the engine to see if you can isolate it. If you're not comfortable with that, then find out what the torque spec. is for the rocker arms and torque as necessary (this is a much cleaner way to do it, if you can).
