Basic Hop-Up



Im about to order a 3 inch "offroad" zzperformance down pipe. Their cats are not carb legal, so I'm not going to take a chance on wasting the extra $70 for a cat that can prove itself useless. When I smog it I will just swap the downpipe back to stock for the day. Downpipe and gaskets are going to run me $180. After that I'll be getting the PCM, and a 3.4" pulley for the S/C. Im going to stick with a black Thrasher press on pulley, I want everything to appear stock so the smog visual doesn't give me trouble. I'd love to do headers, but smog legal headers are kind pricey. I imagine the bolts on the down pipe are baked with dirt, maybe a little rust. Should I hit them with some WD-40 throughout the week letting them soak?
 
Found this (http://r.ebay.com/tnz3wT) on ebay by Speed Daddy. It comes with hardware and everything. It's quite a bit cheaper so I'm a little skeptical, but it fits quite nice in the high-school budget. How bad can it possibly be? My fab skills are pretty good, so I can do some custom work if necessary. If I find some good feedback on it, I'll buy it tonight.
 
Many of us run there headers. Not sure on there downpipe but it should fit. For $200-220 why not just get headers instead?

They will not pass CA smog visual. The down pipe I don't mind swapping every 2 years, but headers are a little excessive. Headers that will pass are around $500 I believe, not worth it unless I run into a bunch of extra money.
 
Ahhh didn't see that you were in Cali. Yea downpipe would be easier to install/uninstall.

Downpipe is ordered. I'll probably take my stock one off ahead of time, I know I'll probably be excited to put the new down pipe on as soon as it comes in. I went ahead and ordered the speed daddy down pipe, I'll leave some feedback on that for others.
 
Downpipe took me 30 min or so to take off, from jacking up the car to lowering it back down. I sprayed the bolts a few hours ahead of time, and used a breaker bar, U-joint, and extensions. Definitely an easy job as long as you make sure you're completely on the nuts before you start wrenching.
 
Just ordered an Overkill Motorsports PCM. $255 including shipping, had them take the codes off for a 180 t-stat and high flow/no cat. Im keeping the stock PCM for smog purposes, I have a feeling when they plug into the OBDll something will come up.

Speaking of smog. If I put the stock intake, exhaust, and PCM back in, but left a 3.4 pulley in it would knock pretty bad wouldn't it? Even if I kept it out of the boost area, would it even run all the monitors in order to pass smog?
 


the tuned pcm will be fine. all systems will show ready. see no reason why it wont pass smog.

when you swap the dp for inspection just dont beat on it, normal driving should not make KR.
 
You sure it's a lifter though??

I can almost bet it's the cheap ass china built single walled flex pipe on that downpipe. They always tick and make noise.

But if you still thinks it's valvetrain, dump a half quart of trans fluid in the oil to clean the engine. Trans fluid is like the laundry soap for motors, it cleans everything.
 
Yeah im positive it's a lifter. I changed the oil and substituted 3/4 a quart for marvel mystery oil. Hopefully I can get it cleaned up, the exhaust is pretty solid it doesn't leak. Sold my Ford Exploder today, so I ended up buying an Aeroforce Interceptor reader, 3.4 pulley, pulley puller, and a smaller belt. The PCM should be shipped out Monday, probably took Thanksgiving and today off. Thought I would be low on cash being a teenager and all, but things are coming together fairly quick!

you smog test will be fine, I have SD headers with their 3'' downpipe and no cat and my smog papers shows all ready.

I also think its the SD flex pipe making that ticking noise
