bad window regulator

Got info from here about replacing my window regulator. I'm wondering why when a window regulator goes bad the window decides to drop down and not simply stay up until its repaired ?
I thought maybe liability issues on part of manufacturer ( in this case GM ) ,since you'd want the window to go up / down properly at all times ???
But its broke !!!
I know that , instead somebody could break into your car by sliding window down from outside ??? I guess if it stayed up you could as owner of the car forget about fixing it ,especially if it is a back window like mind ,that very rarely is used ,going up or down ???
Until I repair it any good way to keep it from dropping down, tape is not working. I tried mounting tape on sides . . . is there a better place ?

the cable broke, why it dropped. ive done the block of wood trick as well. works great to keep it up till you get a new regulator.
