Hey,
Is there a good way to test if an engine mount needs to be replaced?

A visual inspection of the top mounts will tell you if they are toast. Keep in mind though, the top factory mounts are quite soft. I would suggest some mounts from 3800performance.com
As far as the lower mounts are concerned... the engine mount seems to go quicker than the tranny mount. I knew mine was shot when I couldn't fit the larger PF-47 oil filter on the oil filter neck. The engine was actually sitting too far back!
Unfortunately, I can't take credit for the sig, but thanks for the compliment.
When you visually inspect the mounts, look for obvious signs of rubber cracking and general fatigue. How many miles on the stock mounts? You could always "flip the mounts". there is a writeup in the how-to section. This is a quick and simple way firm up the mount. I'd say if you are close to or around 100K mark, it's definitely time to swap them out for either new OEM mounts, or more likely some solid mounts from 3800 performance.
Stick your hand down by the crank pully and see if there is hyd oil sitting down there. It will feel like cottage cheese.
