Backfire!

Hi Guys,

I have a really nice 02 GTP with only 100,000 gentle KM, recently changed O2, plugs, wires, PCV all AC Delco, old plugs changed at 100,000 km, original with no suspicious signs of engine issues, I also installed KN intake and Magnaflow Catback with U Bend delete, I am now experiencing a little bit of backfire when engine is cold when I am pulling away from parkade and take my foot off the gas otherwise car runs fine, is this normal or do I need a tune?

No reason for a tune, because this issue is un-related to that.

A good guess is that your new cat-back exhuast system allows you to hear more than the factory setup. Its not un-commom to hear a backfire because of the waste spark ignition system, if enough fuel is present in the exhaust and the spark plug fires again on the exhaust stroke, it will lite it off.

I'm modded far beyond what you've got done and can make my car "backfire" at anytime. Just have to quick goose the throttle and let off while under 15-25 mph and a pop or two can be heard.

Thanks so much for your reply much appreciated, my car looks identical to yours except my 02 wheels are different.
Yes I wasn't completely sure if my issue was a concern or not as the car runs and drives superb, just changed the oil tonight and going to do the fuel filter on the weekend, I was considering going to a 3.6" pulley but more mods would be required?
As I am in Vancouver Canada believe it or not I have found it very difficult to get any info on this car and getting it tuned is almost impossible, would you recommend that I clean the throttle body as a maintenance issue or leave as is?

Cleaning the MAF and TB is always a good idea if its never been done. Just remove the MAF before spraying the throttle body.

As for the 3.6, more mods "should" be done before adding more air into the motor.

I also forgot to mention that I am running my Cat Back with no resonator and in my opinion my car sounds great as I have read various opinions and points of view on this but for my setup it works really well, performance is great and currently burning premium fuel at 10.9L per 100km :)

use Throttle body cleaner, or carb and choke cleaner. remove the maf before cleaning the TB. you dont want anything but MAF cleaner to touch the maf.
