so i was looking at what vehicles came with the 4t65e trans. it seems there is the 4t65e awd. so, i wonder what it would take to do an awd conversion. the hard part would be the rearend.

you would have to have thousands of dollars to blow, and a year of your life it to put into something like this.
 
i am sure it would take thousands and alot of time and hard work, but isnt that part of being an automotive enthusiast? innovation, technology, etc..
 


the grand prix g8 concept was AWD. drivetrain out of an aztec. broke every couple 1/4 mile runs....
 


Compare an AWD Pontiac 6000 to its run of the mill FWD counterpart.

- The exhaust hump was widened and raised a bit to make room for the driveshaft to run to the back.
- Due to the exhaust hump being slightly taller inside the car, the AWDs got a revised/shorter version of the standard center console.
- The spare tire compartment was eliminated (spare tire was moved INTO the trunk) to make room for the rear differential and components.
- The entire floor plan was reinforced to deal with the torque of the power in the back.

Even on a car that came with an AWD version from the factory, it took major work to the floor plan in order to get the system to fit and operate. Can it be done? Of course, anything can. Is it feasible? That depends on how much money you have/are willing to spend, how much time you're willing to put into figuring out how to make it work, how much frustration you're prepared to deal with, etc.
 
id say its really not worth it unless you are rich and have a nice area and lift to work in your gp wont move off that lift for a while, it would take a long time. if it ever got done though it would be a hell of a ride and id love to see
 
That sounds amazing! Really if u think about it you wouldnt have to be that rich to do it. These cars are becoming cheaper. Pick one up for idk 13000 for a lower mileage and put 3,000-5000 in the awd your still under 20,000 mod it up and you'll be great.
 
awd with a 4t65 is less like awd and more like front or rear wheel drive, just not at the same time...

If your front spins, your rear gets power.... if the rear spins then the front gets power. the versatrack system was designed to get grandgrandma out of her driveway, not beat up on subarus.
 


Also think about the added weight. You would need an absolutely ridiculous setup to run what some of us are already running......but then again if money, resources, etc aren't an obstacle. But if I've got that much money im skippin all that bs and a car that's fast as hell from the factory. Can it be done? Of course......is it smart/practical.....absolutely not.
 
Isnt that pretty much what any awd system does? Give power to the wheels that can use it. I can't see it being 100% front or 100% rear all the time. I know some systems will let the car use like 80% fwd for fuel and stability and maybe 100% fwd maybe but I doubt it's like a switch. Please correct me if I'm wrong and add resources.

Most awd systems (like the one on my TBSS) uses torque bias'ing via torque sensing (aka TOR-SEN). This gives me the ability to move power around to different wheels, but it will never lightswitch between front and rear. My tbss will only give up to 70% of the power to the rear wheels, and in the case of the rear losing traction that power will then go to the front. I also have a limited slip rear that will help maintian bias.

In a 4t65e awd system, you can in reality only have 1 wheel getting power at a time, its like having 3 open differentials, vs the 2 or 3 torque sensing differentials that a real AWD system has. In the case that nothing has good traction (aka getting out of a driveway) things work pretty good as they will "lightswitch" back around to all of the tires as they lose traction, then the advanced traction control system will start applying brakes to wheels that have no traction to transfer power to wheels that do.

So, without an active electronic system, and some modified parts, you would never even have a functional awd system... it would be a bare bones versatrack system (notice they never directly called versatrack awd until recently, i consider it false advertizing if you ask me)
 
I'd still love to see it. In this set up is the transfer case in the transmission? I wonder if a transfer with a smarter setup could be add(if money isn't an issue I guess anythings possible but I mean under like 6k). Adding possi to front and rear would probably be a big help. I don't like the idea of using brakes to help transfer torque to another tire but I know my gt has it up front.
