Auxiliary Transmission Cooler Options

Hi All,

I recently purchased a 2006 Grad Prix GXP, i'm looking to add an auxiliary transmission cooler but want to know what sort of options i have. Just to be clear, i want one to bypass the radiator.

Does anyone have info on current options and date on temps?

I want this, but $310 is a bit steep for me. http://shop.tripleedgeperformance.com/2005-LS4-53-V8-FWD-Transmission-Cooler-Kit-Stand-Alone-Max2-TC4921-LS4.htm and is it really worth it?

I found an "eBay special" but 1) I'm not sure if it has everything i need 2)I can't tell if it goes through the radiator or not. http://www.ebay.com/itm/FILTER-ADAPTER-SS-LINE-HOSE-TRANSMISSION-RADIATOR-ENGINE-OIL-COOLER-SILVER-3-/161724613894?

Or i can go super cheep-o and get a regular one from the auto parts store with the rubber hoses for under $60.

Any thoughts?

As mentioned above, definitely segregate the cooler from the rad. As long as it is in an area of good air flow you can do without a fan. If you can afford to do so, convert to AN fittings and hose while you are there. It doesn't have to be braided stainless...black nylon like the product Fragola offers is fine. If you need a package, let me know.

Just remember, the point of the cooler is lower temps and prolong transmission life. While the TEP cooler kit may not be the cheapest option, make sure you are getting at least a comparable setup. The last thing you wan't to do is skimp and try to save a buck, when in reality you are doing something preventive to save a lot of bucks! It would be no fun if a cheap furnace brazed core came apart on the highway!

Do not use the factory radiator ....standalone

And use universal powersteering line. It's a **** ton more durable

Awesome, this is exactly what i am looking for. Thanks!

Thanks for the input! Do you have the AN fittings for that cooler 91parkave linked to on eBay? http://www.ebay.com/itm/201351290527 What would they run me? What about the braided stainless? Ideally, I'd like to have the same setup as TEP is offering but for less.

Awesome writeup! I think I'm still missing some pieces to the puzzle in order to create a similar setup from scratch. I can see the parts better from this writeup http://www.grandprixforums.net/threads/80806-*HOW-TO*-Transmission-Cooler-for-your-LS4-car

So far I think i'm missing the braided line (looks like maybe 3" of line (qty 2)). And also some fittings on the end of the hoses. (see pic below with included items). Any idea what i'm missing?

What i know i need so far for sure is:
-The Tru-Cool Max 30,000 GVW LPD 49211 http://www.ebay.com/itm/201351290527
--6 AN adapter with o Ring to -6 (qty 2) http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ear-at985006erl
-90* -6 female to -6 female AN fitting http://www.summitracing.com/parts/aer-fbm2978

Are you hell bent on braided line

Are you hell bent on braided line

No, especially from what i am seeing the braided line would be over $120 itself and put me above what i wanted to spend. Also, it looks like i would need to connect rubber hose directly to the filter unless i wanted to start welding fittings on.

I think i've made a decision on everything.

-The Tru-Cool Max 30,000 GVW LPD 49211
-6 AN adapter male with o Ring to 6AN male (qty 2)
-6 AN adapter male to -6 male
-90* 6AN female to 6AN female fitting
-6 AN Push Loc to 6an Female (qty 2).

On the cooler side i'll just fit the hose over the cooler like normal with the hose clamps.
On the trans out it will be 6AN with o ring, to 90* 6AN, to 6AN with no o ring, 6AN to push loc. (could not find a push loc with hose on 1 side and male on the other).
On the Trans in would be hose to 6AN push loc, to 6AN with o Ring. Also, i'll probably put hose clamps around the hose on the push loc side for good measure.

The main 'weakness' i guess you can say is the hoses on the cooler being held on by clamps, but that's how it was originally intended.

Also, I've found a 'by the foot' seller of the braided line so if i needed 6' it would only be around $35. Anyone know exactly how much hose would be needed to and from the cooler? Are both sides similar length?
