arp head bolts or tty bolts?

I know this is old but are you sure you use the paste. On ZZP they say NOT to use paste and to use the Teflon tape.
 


Yes, Paste, not tape.

ZZP says to use the tape because paste did not work for them.

Probably so, because the paste was not made to tolerate the heat the engine made, and turned the paste to liquid, and the studs leaks coolant around them. You have to get the right paste, so read the back and what the tolerances are.

The stuff I use is good for like -30*F to +500*F. It costs me like $1.99 a tube, and one small tube will do the whole engine. LIM bolts, front engine cover bolts etc...all the bolts that require sealer because they go into a water jacket.

Some stuff I have seen only goes up to 90*F...so think about what your engine temp. is. :th_wtf: Most likely this is what ZZP grabbed, and it failed on them. So they went tape, and suggest that.

GM installs the head bolts with "their" paste, no problems there ever. Its comparable to the Teflon paste I buy, at a fraction of their price.:th_thumbsup-wink:

Problem with tape is if it comes loose inside the engine, it can and will block some coolant passages, it will not break down...as easily. Paste...the water pump impeller will pretty much break it up for you if it ever does. Tape is tape, paste is paste. You have cold, and hot spikes, and it can take its toll on tape, paste is non hardening, it will always stay soft and gooey. Probably why GM and other companies use some sort of liquid sealer on their head bolts.

Do it what ever way you want, this is what I have done from the start, and have never had one issue on anybody's car. I get calls or emails a couple times a years from others asking for help/the right way to do it. I refer them to the write up I did here or else where. Or, they bribe me with some free pizza or Mt. Dew and ask me to come over and do it for them. Happy to do that too. :th_peaceout:
