I recently put a Fosgate power 1000 in my car (2000 GTP) Now the lights dim something crazy. If I turn it way up the car will actually start skipping like it needs a tune up. Definitely time for an upgrade. These folks have a 160 amp remanufactured alternator for $140. And a 200 amp for $160.
 


If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. My buddy picked up one like that, Claimed to be 150amp+ and we couldn't get more than 80 out of it. (Don't think it was from this particular company, there are a few out there.)

I had Mike Singer (Singer alternators) make me a 250amp alternator for like $400ish. It tests at 255+amp.
He makes ours for like $250-600 depending on amperage. My car stays pinned at 14.9v when its running and I have over 4500 watts of amplifiers. Lots of people run his custom alternators around several car club forums.
 
Genuine HO alternators that last and can push what they're rated cost quite a bit. I have one from DCPowerInc, got it about 4 years ago, and it's still going strong. 110 at idle, 270 at 2K RPM, but it cost me about $400 if I remember correctly. It's essentially a truck alternator rebuilt with massive windings and came with a bracket to adapt to a 3800.

That said, I have heard good things about Signer alternators as well. I'd at least try upgrading your charging system wiring first (you'll need to anyway to get the most out of a HO alternator). And make sure you're using full copper wire, none of that CCA junk. Welding wire is way cheaper than "audio" wire. An AGM battery couldn't hurt either.
 
What is your totally draw? Before you look into a new alternator you need to know how much power you are using, buying an upgrade that still isn't big enough won't do you any good.

Further, did you install your system personally or have it done professionally?

If personally did you perform a "Big 3" upgrade? Did you put a capacitor in? What levels do you have your amps set at?

According to that page I'll need 186 amps. The system was professionally installed. I haven't done the big 3 yet. I don't have a capacitor. I don't plan on getting one either. From what I've read they're pretty much just a bandaid for a weak electrical system.
 


I wouldn't even call them a bandaid. They are like putting a piece of paper over a cut that needs stitches. Dimming lights and other issues are the result of the alternators inability to keep up with the demand. A capacitor acts as a second battery for that already struggling alternator to charge.

I agree that a capacitor is not a cure for the issues here, I was more inquiring about it to find out more about the system and other pieces they had installed.
