• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Any roofers on here?

oh and don't get retractable utility knifes the blade gums up and they don't work well, and if pulling hard the blade they can come out.

my fav was the Stanley 299

like this one

Listen to this guy he knows his stuff

and pick one of these up, its a cats paw nail puller, they cost like 5 bucks at the depot. the cute little 6 inch one will work just fine.

its great for getting the nails that no longer have a head on them out of the wood. you hit the back of it with a hammer and pry the nail out. this tool will dig into the wood a bit and catch the nail, great tool to have on hand, just to have.

pounding the old nails in seems like a good idea but its not, pull every damn last nail that's not holding the roof decking down to the rafters. (these nails left behind will push back up someday) if you find loose boards, or plywood, re nail it down, or if one of the nails for the wood got pulled re nail that as well.

if you slide your hammer on its side up and down the wood, you can feel if a nail is still there but not seen. little piece's of crap like this can poke a small hole in the paper, and like ive said the paper job is important.

and a back pack blower is real nice to do a final blow down of all the dust left behind, a cheap home owner electric blower will work as well.

After doing roofing..I have continued to purchase the hook blades. They work better in 95% of cases than straight blades

Finished up my order at Lowes today. All shingles and equip to be delivered 6/1/12. Around 2200.00 I still gotta rent a dumpster. I just hope i didn't leave anything out. I got my hook blades, and tarps, and a few other things at Harbor freight. It was alot cheaper and on sale.

make sure the weather is clear, and have a good/new tarp on hand, to cover up if need be, from rain and all that good stuff.

its in the roofers hand book to not rip more roof than you can cover if you have bad weather in the area.

we always carried a new 100x100 just to have.......but this is what we did all day, so it paid to have one that big.

I don't have one that big but i have 5 11x11's for throwing **** on. So far the weather looks good.

honestly, thats not good enough, you need at least (2) 20x20 or close to it tarps, just for the ripped off roof to land on.

you want to lay one on the ground, and then tie off the other one to the gutter, and then weight the bottom with bundles of shingles so they cover your bushes or beds, when the pile of crap gets to piling up at the gutters edge, toss the shingles over the tarp so you dont kill stuff, the tarp will keep what dont make it past the beds and nails from being every where.

after you clean up the tarp the amount of nails laying on the tarp is mind blowing. if not for the tarp this all gets into your lawn. no more bare feet lol.

5x5 will be hard to deal with. they blow away, and move when chit hits them.

Well I can take them back to Harbor Freight. They were on sale. Hopefully the sale is still going on. I can go back there Wed. when I get some time.

I was nervous too.. You are prepared, have help and ready to work. Think about all that gym time you put in over the last year or two. All the weight you lost.

It's all going to pay off this weekend, and you'll be a sore hurtin pup with a new roof when it's over.

Not too bad. Didn't get the top done because we ran out of time (didn't start on it either) and had to replace some sheeting. Also Sat was fuggin miserable hot! Honestly the top rt. looks pretty good without replacing it. Sure it has some granuals missing and one torn shingle but the flashing on all the pipes are still shiny. They said they can come back some weekend and finish. I'll take a pic when i get a chance. I'm so sore presently it's not even funny. They did most of the work after tearing off and I carried 90% of the shingles up onto the roof and did most of the cleanup work.

oh boy you got to be the human power ladder. that will hurt like mad. i used to carry 2 bundles at a time back in the day lol not any more tho lol

ripping and loading the roof, you took all the grunt work for yourself....not that banging on shingles feels any better at the end of the day.

Ryan..I did the same thing. I understand that feeling.

congrats though...that's a ton of forward progress and think of the calorie count.
