First of all, a little background: I'm in the military, so I move about every four years. I'm currently renting, and I'm thinking of buying. I'm single, and a full-size house is more than I need or want.
I've been considering buying a duplex or small apartment building, living in one unit, and renting out the other(s). Since I'm sometimes gone for months at a time, I do plan on working with a property manager. Does anybody have any experience with this (or with rental properties in general). What expenses can I expect? If I plan on living in it for about four years, then moving and renting both units, do I still finance it as owner-occupied? Any other advice or experience would be appreciated.
