Ok, i have a 30 year old 3 ton package unit. And i been thinking about either a goodman 13 seer for 3,800 or a american standard for triumph 16 for 6500 that gets the 1500 tax credit. Thoughs are my best to bids.

Well i also been thinking about buying a unit outright and tring to switch it out my self. Is it really that hard other than moving the 650# unit off my slab and moving the new 500ish one on and re running the gas and wires and hooking up the ducts? I am sure someone will grab my old unit i put it out on the curb :) or atleast grab the copper out of it :) I think i can save about 1/2 but something are worth paying for. Should i just bite the bullet and pay someone to do it for me? Which should i go for? I only plan on being here for a year or 2 longer.
 


It illegal to open up a A/C system with out a licence. Commercia, home, or auto/diesel. Even if it isnt working there is probally trace amounts of the refrgerant left in it. And if it is 30 y/o it is consivable it contains R-12. Not really sure what they used to use in the older home units. There are severl types of refrigerant depends on applications(home, commercail, auto)
 
Its a package unit, don't need to touch refrigerant as its already charged, hence why i don't need a 509 to buy it. And you don't need 509 to get a city permit either. Homes never used r12 they used R22 and most of the newer are already 410 The goodman above is r22 and the other is 410.
 
22 is being phased out and will continue to rise in price once it is done being manufactured. If it was me, I would go with the 410A unit. 410A is a much more efficient gas which allows the system to run cooler and reduces the risk of compressor burnout.
 
i wasnt sure about home, R-22 was used alot in disel powered refrigs. like on trailers and what not. go with the 410 powered unit then.

What is 509? Are you thinking 609? The EPA certification for MVAC (cars) is 609...for the "non-automotive" you need 608. Right now it is looking like 410a is the direction things will go, but it may just as likely occur that a different refrigerant will become mainstream before it is all said and done. 13 SEER is the minimum you will see on anything anymore. Is the $1500 a credit or a deduction? That makes a big difference. R-11 and R-12 were used in "home" applications, but not a lot.
 


IF you go to remove the outside unit and it strung a LEAK then its not illegal besides who is gonna see. just leave enough copper to solder back in. and oh yah, if u use solder from 'stay bright" u can solder and forget about brazing as i use it with R410 all the time and it works under extreme pressures. u can also rent the vacuum pump and gauges to pull it down from autozone if you need them. oh and look at ducane. its so much cheaper and go with the 13 seer and froget abouthe tax credit. even with the credit (if u owe taxes) you still wont recover the extra u spent over the life of the unit. also if u get ducane u get a ten year warranty fro the factory. if your close to ohio/pennsylvania ill put it in for 2500
 
I got a package unit not a split system. Everything is all in 1 unit, only need to hook up the ducts and wires and the natural gas. I decided to go with the 16seer unit and his supplier didn't have one so. I ended up getting a killer deal on a triumph 14 3.5 ton for 5600 and still get the tax credit so it winded up only being 300 more than a goodman. So i think the 300 dollars is well worth the upgrade from a generic unit to one that rated number 1. I shure do notice the extra .5 ton of cooling :)
