• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Another problem...

Sounds like lifter tick to me. Switch to a 5W 30 oil for a little while and see if it helps. It's a thinner oil and might stop the ticking if its the lifter. I used to get some nasty lifter on a GM 3400 engine. I started putting 5W 30 in every other oil change and it worked great for quieting it down.

is that a cold start? first in the morning? after the idle drops or it warms up the sound is gone? if so its normal. iat sensor sounds like crap when cold. put a open cone on and you really hear it.

The oil looks pretty good still, but I went out and bought some Mobil 1 just for the beck of it. Going to change the oil tomorrow and see if it helps after driving it for awhile afterwards

Nope, its my daily driver. I drove it last night and it was way louder. But then this morning on the way to work it wasn't doing it. It's very sporadic

Hmm. Well mine started making the noise the first night I went out with it and got it on the highway. It was sitting for about 3 months cuz I needed to change out the head gaskets. It eventually went away on its own though so i'm not really sure why yours would crap out like that and weird how it comes and goes. Maybe an oil change might fix it for ya. Every once in a while when I change my oil, I use that motor flush that they sell at autozone to clean out any gunk it might have. You pour the bottle into the motor, let it run for 5 minutes and then drain and change the oil.

It is strange. Changed the oil and drove it for about half an hour and nothing changed. Also, I've noticed if I give it gas where it's above 2500 and let off quick, it's gets way louder as the engine is decelerating

Well my next suggestion would be to get in there and see what you find man. Might just need a good cleaning inside. I know when I tore mine down to do the head gaskets, I found some sort of almost charcoal looking pieces of who knows what in there. Is it throwing any codes?

In order to save some time, and because I'm not a master mechanic, I brought it to our local gm dealer to have someone give me there opinion. He told me it was definitely the lifters, but if it was his car, he wouldn't fix it. Now again, I'm not a master mechanic, I do a lot of small engine stuff mainly. He said it could last forever this way, but to get it fixed would involve a new camshaft and would cost in total $1000+. What do you guys think? If it's just the lifter rattling, do you think it's critical, or is he right saying it could drive for 20 years like this?

you can change just the lifters. google lifters in 33 minutes. whole jobs on a vid.

id try 10 w 40 oil see if that shuts them up. its thicker. in the summer car runs hot and the 30 weight oil gets thinner. older lifters bleed off the oil pressure.

I'll make the switch to 10w-40 in the near future, and hopefully thatll help some. I've never gone into an engine before, so do you think I would be able to handle changing lifters? I maintaing all the machines I own, but I have yet to master internal engine components haha

Diff between 10w40 and 10w30?

if you can do a lim job you can do lifters. not bad.

I wouldn't say I feel comfortable doing this haha. I've never really dug into an engine like this, and don't want to mess anything up further. I know that ultimately it's the only real solution.

On a side note, from experience, what do you guys think about Rislone and additives like that as a band aid, temporary "fix"?

It's really not hard. Follow each step as it is in the write up. Lay everything out the way you took it off and you'll be fine. It has plenty of pics and all of the torque specs you need. If you have any questions, you could always ask here.
