another p0102, yes I did a search

And none of the threads I found matched exactly what my car is doing. Its a 98 Regal GS with 165k. The three codes I am getting are p0102, p0171 (o2 bank 1 lean), and p1404 (stupid EGR).

Steps taken so far.
1. Replaced the MAF
2. Checked for blockages in the screen and air intake system
3. Cleared the codes

The codes have not repeated but I've only done one 8-10 mile test drive since the replacement, but there have been some new symptoms since then. I still get the surging and killing right after start up which seems to level off after a minute or so, but now if I drive it or simply rev the motor the idle point gets higher and higher with each acceleration or rev up to 2k rpm at "idle." There is no hesitation during acceleration, perhaps a bit less gusto than there has been in the past but that's it, and no indication of misfire.

I am going to check the vacuum lines and harness wires tomorrow as that seems to be a recurring problem with the p0102, and check the fuse in the under hood box. Is there any other points I should be checking during this inspection that could cause the high idle?

Most likely dry rotted "T" fittings around the Boost Bypass Valve, Fuel Pressure Regulator at the front of the fuel rail, under the blower snout to the Lower intake, and back around to the MAP sensor. That is a big issue with our cars...another is the line from the throttle body to the EVAP canister on the back of the blower housing...and sometimes even the black hosing from the vacuum tree on the top of the blower itself. Might also be a bad throttle body gasket but I'd spray some carb cleaner around the engine bay and watch to see if any spot you hit changes the idle.

TB gasket is brand new as of last night so I think that an unlikely culprit, but I will check it if the vacuum lines are good. Thanks.

Vacuum Harness? They should be able to turn the screen around you and you can point to what you need. Not sure on a part number though...I just bought some on the last build and wish I would have saved the ticket now...

Whenever you get multiple codes you should read up on each and learn how they may be causing each other or interacting. Gearchatter.com has all your codes and the FSM info for each listed. Sure it's for a vette or GTO, but it's all the same stuff, same tests. According to a quick hit that I did P0171 shouldn't happen while P0102 is set. So determining which order they set is probably going to help you track the issue.

P1404 isn't going to be a bad vacuum line. That's actual measured pintle position.
P0171 could be a vacuum leak, but it'll likely clear when you fix the MAF/EGR codes.
P0102 could be a bunch of things, I'd look at any work recently done to the car and the connetor etc.

Well, got a new harness and replaced the line from the throttle body to the evap canister and... little change, if any. They needed to be replaced for sure, but was not a solution to the problem. I can now hear a definite sucking sound though, not sure of the origin, sounds like passenger side, but my car is loud. Havent had any codes since the replacement, but I will keep my eye on them. And P1404 can kiss my a**, I should just delete the system.
