another GTP stalling out sometimes

My wifes 2000 Grandprix GTP was stalling out about a month ago.She was driving down the road and she told me it was like someone just turned the key off.IT wouldnt start back up.So i jumped in the pickup to go and tow it back.It was about 30 minutes till i found her thats another story.Anyways i reached in turned the key and it fired up and i drove it home.I started reading that night and CPS jumped out at me from all the reports of stalling. So i went to the Dealer and got one and put it in.The car has been running great. Then she called me this morning at 6am telling me the car stalled when she was coming to a stop sign and then in town at the traffic lights. She says it wont idle.I have done a tune up with fuel filter in the last 1000 miles.2 years ago they had to put the new fuel pump resistor in it and relocated it on the firewall.IT does have a K&N filter in it and when i did the tune-up i did clean and re oil it.Maybe i got to much oil on it and the MAF sensor is dirty.I have never cleaned the MAF or IAC and it has 118,000 miles.Im going to try and clean the 2 but if you have any other ideas that would be great.I did a search and was reading about all the others ones stalling.By the way great site.

I would start there, particularly with the MAF and IAC.

To clean the MAF just go to the parts store and pick up a can of electrical contact cleaner. For the IAC I usually just take a can of brake cleaner (you should be able to use the electrical contact cleaner as well) and dose it real good and then use a old tooth brush to get in there and get everything out and then hit it with the cleaner again to rinse it all out.

I think you are on the right track though with the MAF and IAC.

Yeah, if it were the CPS she probably would be complaining about the tach not working and the car should start back up easily.

Thanks for fast response.I talked to her today on her lunch break and she told me it would do it in park or nuetral when she would start it the motor just wouldnt idle it would stall out.Going down the road she said it was fine.So i think i can eliminate the Torque converter not unlocking since it would only do it when you would drop it into gear.Plus she just called and if she keeps her foot on the gas it will stay running in gear and out of gear.So as soon as she gets her i will pull the maf and iac. Thanks for all the help!

Yeah, that was my problem.

I got rid of the K&N filter. 155 dollars for a new MAF sensor!!! Thats crazy.

Anyways, I replaced the MAF and cleaned the IAC. Runs like a dream again. I am even getting better fuel mileage. :)

Ok, Ill bite. Who is Ed Morad?

I know I could have gone online and bought a MAF sensor cheaper, and I hated to pay that price, but when you need the car to run for getting to work and back, sometimes you just have to pay the price.

The IAC had alot of Carbon build up.I cleaned it with a tooth brush and rag.The MAF sensor had some gunk built up on it.I took a Q tip and some cleaner safe for MAF sensors. Now you can see the actual metal pieces of the sensor and they shine. So it was dirty. It does idle alittle higher now. Before it was down around 500 to 600 or so now in park its up around 800-900.

Give it some time, it may even out.

FWIW, Ed also has a website where you can put in parts requests.

Well im lost on this one.I cleaned the IAC and MAF and the car ran great for about a week or so.Then the wife was driving it home from work cruise set at 58 and she felt it kinda lunge forward and then the throttle wasnt responsive.By the time she got off the side of the road it was stumbling. After it stopped running she shut the key off for a couple minutes and it fired right back up and drove the other 25 minutes home with no problems.I checked the codes and nothing.I checked live Data and had a friend who is a gm tech on the phone and was reading all the data to him.He still thinks it may be the MAF he told me it can be intermitent and can make it stall out.I have already replaced the cps cleaned the IAC and MAF any other ideas?

Drive with the MAF unplugged for a week. I think it puts the PCM into another fueling mode and you'll still be able to drive ok. I know others that have had MAF problems just unplug it and the car drives smooth again, and diagnoces their problem. Have someone else confirm this before trying though. I'm a tuning nooB.

I will wait and see if someone will respond on here and confirm that i can unplug it and run it to see if it doesnt stall out.

One way to troubleshoot the MAF is to unplug it and drive it, yes. I have found that in cold temps, it does seem to want to stall out when first starting with the MAF unplugged. But the majority of the time, it is fine to drive without the MAF. It does affect gas mileage, or at least in my case. So don't do this unless you need to.

But my father had a similar problem. He had already replaced the MAF once with a rebuild one for $140. So he didn't think that was the problem. I had him unplug the MAF and start the car. It ran and idled fine. Then I had him plug in the MAF and start the car. Idled rough and almost died. Barely ran. Replaced the MAF with a good GM used one from Ed and it has been fine ever since.

I know its an old topic..but did you ever find out what was causing the stalling? My 97 has a VERY simular problem and my MAF has already been changed

I cleaned the MAF agian and it has not stalled in a few weeks.I think i may have over oiled the K&N filter when i replaced the CPS and did the tune up and thats why it was stalling out after i did all the work. But i took some mouth wash and a q tip and cleaned it agian.

On the GTPs, are you guys checking the vaccuum lines? Anytime mine behaved this way it was always like a $5 fix by replacing those rubber hoses. They do wear out. Before I check anything else, I check those, particularly where the lines meet in a T. (James was the first one who told me about it and helped me with them the first time around...)

i would think if its a vaccum lines it would idle really rough all the time.Mine was running fine all the time then just lost power and then it would stall out.I recleaned the MAF a couple of weeks ago with mouth wash and all is well.A buddy of mine who is a GM tech said forget the MAF cleaner at the parts store just use some scope mouth wash and it made it nice and shinny. So we will see.I have my fingers crossed this was it.
