My local autozone has the metal ones. What year car do you have? The 97/98 had a tensioner that has the lower elbow cast into it. These can break... That is prob why they mentioned it. There is always markup on parts when you go to a shop. Which is also why if you don't like the price tell them and they will most likely work with you to get the price down. But if you can do the work yourself, it is always cheaper. Keep in mind the plastic elbows do break inside the lower manifold and need pryed out... Good luck


I have a 98. But I had this same piece replaced almost a year ago, I don't know if the tensioner had any issues that caused the same issue. I'ma start tomorrow.

home depot or lowes, buy a 30 piece 6 sided socket set. 30 bucks tops. they come metric and standard in the kit. its pretty much all you need to do most maintenance on a w body.

Can you post a link from home depot/lowes/walmart etc on what exact kind of set I'm supposed to get? Every time I search for a "30 piece 6 sided set" its waaaaay more then just 30bucks.

I just picked up the $30 set for the wife's place. It kills me that if I grab stuff from the box then I'm missing it at the other house.

For Christmas 3 years ago I got a 200 peice craftsman mechanics tool set thing. Its come in handy so much, its just lacking 1/2 inch sockets variety and wrench variety and deep sockets. I had to add a few sockets that it lacked that help a lot when working on my car like deepwell sockets I need to get some standard and metric sets of them. Yeah it was like 200 bucks but the investment is worth it in the long run even if its was a gift. Hit up garage sales you can grab a boat load of tool cheap as hell and if its an older guy usually its stuff thats like 30+ years old and indestructible. Before you know it you will need to get a shed for everything haha.

Now..if someone asks me ....which are the tools to go get and be nearly 100% set on almost all cars/trucks. I can do that. Between knowing what was in my buddies box and my own. You'd spend probably the same amount as the "sets" and get much better tools.

For example.. there's very few uses for 12 point sockets. Ford driveshafts and a couple other things, but mostly, they are worthless nut/bolt head rounders.
A set of pivot head ratcheting wrenches is a must.
Most stuff is done with deep sockets, I only grab a shallow socket if required.
Invest in a good prybar

Things like those above make you faster on the job too.
 


not really. put a socket on the pulley bolt on the tensioner, then turn the nut so the pulley moves away from the belt, once you figure out what way to turn it slide the belt off the alt pulley.

you may need a small pipe ( or breaker bar) to hold the tensioner in place, its damn tight, leverage is your friend.

for my 98 GP, is the alternator connected to the tensioner bracket? Like are they one piece?
 


I'm trying to figure it out but I can't get the alternator out, there's a bracket in front of the alt connecting to the tensioner bracket
 
its 2 bolts, one also hold the bracket on, the other is in that U shaped part on the front. as seen here.

My bad about the pic, I finally got the alt off, I missed a bolt.. Those 2 hoses, do I need to disconnect them from the tensioner bracket or can I leave them. I ask because my hose are almost melted around the pipe. And it's hard to get them off
