Alternator question for 98 GTP

Hi, I have a 98 gtp that the alternator went out on. I don't have the money right now for a new one, so calling around a few junk yards I learned they are different for n/a and sc. I can't find any for mine, but plenty for a n/a car. Upon searching both part numbers, I've noticed that all the specs are the same. Can anyone please tell me the difference between them? I'm a single dad and don't have much money. I'd hate to go buy one and it not work. Any help be greatly appreciated.

N/A and supercharged use the same alt that junk yard is full of crap. Only one that is different is the 3.1 alternator.

-Edit- Seems I am mistaken.

Pin 3 looks to be different.

GTP Alt
  • Pin 1 - Stator
  • Pin 2 - Lamp
  • Pin 3 - Field Monitor
  • Pin 4 - Sense +
GT Alt
  • Pin 1 - Stator
  • Pin 2 - Lamp
  • Pin 3 - Ignition +
  • Pin 4 - Sense

A 97/98 non sc alternator will fit a gtp. They are the same..you have to find those years only. The alternator bracket changed in 99+...ebay has them cheap.

you can use a 99 up alt if you take the alt bracket with it from the junk yard. you'll just need a new pair of elbows.

I thought the junk yard was wrong too lol. But I got the same thing from a few different ones. Even looking it up at AutoZone, I get 2 different numbers. Same exact specs, just different part numbers. Don't make no Damn sense. I don't know why a n/a alternator supposedly won't work. I think it will. I guess only way to find out is to try 😱

It will .. I took one off my mom 97 regal ls and put it in buddies 98 gtp. No issues. As long as its coming from a 3.8 it will work.

field sensing and ign + are the same thing, a remote batt voltage refrence to help control the field.

my 97 gtp has a 2004 L26 (na) alternator and bracket, our 442 is using a 98 L36 riviera cs144 alternator with a 99 ssei harness/pcm.

as long as your using the correct alternator for the correct bracket your golden, if you upgrade to the cs144 alternator chassis (external fan/140 amps) youll have to swap the connector.

also bear in mind only the up level cars actually used more than one pin.

high load cars will get the additional remote power sensing, and the G chassis guys and certain others get a battery thermister lead for extra voltage due to internal resistance changes in the battery

Thanks for all the help. I ended up getting one off a 97 lesabre. Looked the same, so I bought it. Brought it home, put it on, and it's been doing great all day!

One more thing I did notice is the pin lay out shows 4 wires. My car only has 2. I even pulled the wire loom back to make sure some wires didn't come out.
