Alternator issues.

I just bought a brand new alternator because my old one died on me.
When i pull the negative post off the battery, the car dies.:th_scratchhead:
Where are all the grounds to the alternator?
Any suggestions?

Umm, Sorry theres an issue leaving it connected?

Last i checked you need a working battery so the alt doesnt aslpode.

might be a built in protection feature.

If the alternator is working properly, unplugging the battery will do nothing to the car.

Do you know where all of the grounds are? Ive got the one on the trans grounded. Any more?

Problem solved.

It is not for old cars. My 04 SRT4 does the same thing, if the alternator is off, but with it on, the battery can be taken out and the car will still kick.

And now, I can do the same to the GP.

Curious to see who actually knows and who just posted to post, where are the alternator grounds?

The alternator is grounded through its case, from there to the engine through the mount. The engine is coupled to the tranny, and the tranny is grounded to the battery near-ish to the starter.

The key to getting a good ground is a clean and solidly mounted alternator. Most people don’t have any issues with that unless they paint stuff around the alternator.

However, if you have a doubt you can add a grounding wire from the rear alternator mounting bolt to the fender well ground. This will provide a much better and more direct ground if you’re having issues.

Well, I’m not aware of the “problems” you were/are having. That being said, yes, IMO running an extra ground wire can be beneficial when loading the alternator above about 50%. As I mentioned earlier, installing this will make for a better more direct ground than from the factory. IMHO that extra ground is the most needed part of what most ppl refer to as the Big 3 upgrade. GPs come from the factory with puny 8 gauge wiring, and the fender well ground is painted over. The ground running to the tranny is usually solid and not an issue. So I’m not sure what happened there. I’d start be checking and cleaning all your main ground and positive connections, then go from there.:th_thumb-up:

Im not being a smartass. If you don't know the answer to what im asking, or have any valuable input, dont post just to post.
