Airbag turns off & on

We own a 2007 GT and the passenger airbag light switches from on to off for no known reason when a passenger is in the seat (I think it may even do this with no passenger). It goes from off to on ranging from every few seconds to every few minutes. I assume this is some kind of sensor or something but haven't been able to find anything about this issue. I expected to find out it was a recall issue, but found nothing. We are really worried about this because my wife carpools and usually has a passenger that may or may not be protected by the airbag in the case of an accident.
Has anyone had this problem? Can you tell me how to fix this?
 


is this with a small child in the seat or an adult or does this do it when empty for sure. As far as I knew there was a certain weight sensor that was in the seat so that it would auto turn off when no one or a baby in a car seat was strapped in there. I would GUESS that it is a faulty sensor for that seat if it is not acting correctly.
